Anyone else into the sport?

I don't know what struck me, but after the world cup i've gotten really into the sport. I play it all the time and when im at work im thinking about what new tricks I can make up.

I've been playing for about a month now and naturally I suck (Im not athletic at all, been fat all my life so I never took up sports untill about...well actually this year) but I what I love most is practicing ball control, keeping it in the air while standing in place.

I suck at offensive and defensive play however, can't really steal or keep the ball in my vicinity for shit. Thats what I really wanna get good at and thats what keeps me from joining in teams when asked to do so....any tips? sites, instructions? or practices to get better at that.

anyone else a fan who has their soccer stories?...coolest shit I can do is kick the ball in the air and then kick it again while doing a handstand...a little move I haven't gotten down yet (timing is hard) but im getting better at it.

The best way to improve is to actually play the game, don't turn down any invitation to join a team. Yeah you suck now, so what? So did the rest of any team when they started.

It is a team sport, and you're better off learning with a team.

True...I did that for the first time today...played a game...lost horribly but got a few decent blocks in.

I just hate Zidane and Ronaldinho for making it look so easy, it's like Bob Ross all over again.

I used to play a fair amount (60 lbs ago). Team practice is the only real way to get better, but a drill I used was to put a series of 5 marks along a brick wall, and try to hit them. Blue chalk works well.

drill 1. Stand anywhere with the ball, and hit the first mark. Intecept the rebound and hit the second ... without stopping the ball. Do all five.
Drill 2. Walking past, dribbling the ball, hit the marks as if you were passing to a fellow player. Intercept the rebound as if you were receiving a pass.

Right and left alternating series. You'll not only get control, but you'll build power for your passing game too.

Once that get's easy, move the marks up and down the wall, varying the heights.

Chalk out an outline of a goal on the brick wall, full size. Practice shooting for the corners, without tagging the 'pole'
