A good opposition party doesn't often make a good in-power party. Unfortunately, they sometimes get in because people want to vote out the in power party. That's how the Parti Quebecois got in in the first place. People didn't like them, but thye disliked the in power liberals more.
 
problem we having is the conservatives are still pretty much unelectable. people's memory of them is still very negative and they aren't doing an impression of a credible opposition yet.
 
Same thing happened here. The tories were in power for a while under Mulrooney. He became so hated, that the party was practically destroyed in the next election. The leader before him came back and has done an incredible job rebuilding, but by that time, the conservatives had split east and west. Now neither has enough grunt to shift the liberals out.
