Linux sound help

Right, i'm trying to get used to linux... Going fairly well, but one thing really bugs me. On my normal login(Kawaii) all system sounds sound like static. It really hurts my ears. A lot. This doesn't happen on my root login. Also, when i start and mp3 it makes a fairly random static noise... Really annoying.
Any suggestions?

Funny, i could have sworn i posted it in S&T... Maybe those weren't regular mushrooms i ate after all.... :retard:

Look up the soundcard and see what others are using....ALSA or whatever.

If it works great in another account, try changing permissions for /dev/mixer /dev/midi, et al.

on a fresh slack install i usually have to monkey with the permissions on /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp to get any sound at all from a non-privileged account.

i would do some googling, check linuxquestions.org too, you should be able to find something.
