'Loud blast' at Moscow theatre

Attacking was the right thing to do, but they should have been prepared to treat the hostages that would be affected by the gas.

Does this mean we don't have to worry about being criticized by the Russians when civilians get killed in Bahgad?

nah. We get a tit for tat with that. We keep quiet on Chechnya, they keep quiet on the rest of it.

You know, I haven't followed Chechnya and I'm not really sure what that's all about. Is it just Russia trying to hold on to some real estate, or are they trying to keep the lid on terrorist activity aimed at them, the other Great Satan?

ok.. Old Russian territories going back to the days of yore (aka Czar days) included all of the outlying territories that we know of today. The lack of communications and roads pretty much left them to their own devices for centuries. These areas include all manner of quasi Islamic-Mongol-Greek-Ottoman tribes all along the southern montains. During the Russian revolution in the midst of World War 1 they collectively revolted and began and early micro war resistance campaign for independence. Problem is that there were about 10 micro tribes within the area that hated each other just as bad. It was a right icky mess. It was policed in place by Lenin with the military. Oil is discovered, Lenin dies. Stalin goes on his little sterelization campaign. During the midst of the 30s he picks up and deoprts all 1 million Chechyns to little spots in the frozen east. Some gulag, some farms, some industry. It was mostly done to protect the oil reserves in the region because the government was fearful of a second Finland like threat to the south. The late 80s and early 90s saw the collapse of the Russian state. Overnight the Chechyns flood back into their old lands and regroup. All of like 18 months later, after much support from the Gulf States and Al Quaida and such... the locals pick up right where they left off and start attacking everything Russian in sight. The Russians sweep in for the odd demoralized unpaid assault that the gunt level boys think is another pointless Vietnam/Afghanistan thing... up until they started bombing Moscow. Now the general Russian population wants the region crushed under its heel again.

Thanks for the quick history lesson. I found several good links to more info on Chechnya at about.com:

If anyone else wants to check them out....

inside yours. The link that said :land of conflict.

 bastiches.

I screwed up. I clicked on one link and got lucky with a really good article. The rest of the links looked good, so I thought it was a good site. Next time I'll check the links and send them individually. Here's a revised list of links with good stuff on Chechnya:

The best link I was able to find.

A short article about Chechnya on Infoplease.com.

Another short article on National Geographic's website.

Wasn't sure what to make of this one, but included it anyway. It's the official site of the Chechen guv'mint, complete with broken English and anti-Russian propaganda pieces.

A collection of Chechnya-related news articles on Yahoo.com.

I'm not much more educated on Chechnya than Ards. Isn't another reason an important port to the Caspian Sea?

No. Its 100% landlocked.

And moutainous, but one of the sites I found mentioned important railroad links...

and oil.

The most often given reason I found was that allowing Chechnya to break away would encourage other members of the Federation to break away.
