Maj. Schmidt's reprimand

From Canadian Press
The Toronto Star
July 7, 2004.

Following is the text of a letter of
reprimand issued Tuesday by Lt.-Gen. Bruce
Carlson of the United States 8th Air Force
to fighter pilot Maj. Harry Schmidt, who
dropped a bomb that killed four Canadian
soldiers and injured eight others in April
2002 in Afghanistan:

Hmm... If he was that blatantly wrong, I'm surprised they didn't do more to him.

I really am. It sounds like his whole attitude was very defiant, yet the evidence that has been shown that he blatantly disregarded orders. I know, you could probably dig up some stuff where I defended him, but I'm thinking now that he deserves alot more than just a letter.

which you rashly decided was an enemy firing position,

You used the inherent right of self-defence

you acquired combat expertise in previous armed conflicts.

He fucked up. He won't fly again. We hire & train these guys because they are cocky. We allow them to make split second decisions because it's their ass on the line. War is hell.

PT, I wasn't saying that, the what you said before bit...now that all the facts are out it's a little different than before.

I was referring to the way this whole thing has gone, I'm not suprised in the least...and I really feel that were it not for all of the international/media pressure, nothing at all would have been done to this man...cause I've gotten no sense in all this time that his leaders truly gave two shits whatsoever, except for the covering their own asses bit that is.

you portrayed yourself as a victim of the disciplinary process without expressing heartfelt remorse over the deaths and injuries you caused to the members of the Canadian Forces. In fact, you were obviously angry that the United States Air Force had dared to question your actions during the 17 April 2002 tragedy. Far from providing any defence for your actions, the written materials you presented to me at the hearing only served to illustrate the degree to which you lacked flight discipline
That's not a soldier. That's a renegade.

That may be true, but it is very hard for us to sit back here and judge someones actions when we are not there. We can not know what it was like up there unless we were up there with him that night. The basis I'm making my judgement on is how he behaved afterwards. He lied, he got angry, those are both pretty good indicators that the person knew he did something wrong.

As for whether anything would have been done if not for the media coverage? Don't know, the military does choose to make examples from time to time, but of course they also tend to overlook alot of atrocitys during wartime as well. I feel a little uneasy about making a call about things like this when I've never been there and have no idea what it's like.

He'll never see another flight deck...his possibility to continue his career is non-existant, and he's going to have to live in shame for the rest of his miserable life. Anybody who thinks a military reprimand is 'just a slap' is correct from a civilian standpoint, but from a military standpoint, this is a career-killer. He's done, and will not see an honorable discharge. He may not make it to general discharge. This is likely his last job...unless he owns his own business.
