Well...it just started a few minutes ago. The massive bombing of the Gov't centers in Baghdad. We're talking MASSIVE here...thousands of explosions...many buildings on fire or destroyed!
So...want to bet that MASSIVE amounts of innocents are dying as we type here?
Its strategic level stuff against individual bulidings and bunkers still. All F-117, F-111, B-2 stuff. The heavy bombers would just do ugly, ugly things.
The B-52s would be used against the more open terrain ground troops. The payloads that they are capable of delivering would chew up mile long strips of turf. The bomb patterns seen on CNN were a string of 500-2000lb bombs ... no more than 8 at a time... which is right in line with the payload capacity of of fighter bombers like the F-111s and F-14s.
We'll have to wait until the end of the war to see what they say was used where.
...now cruise missiles... thats another story altogether. That can at least be done from far away. I just don't think that they would have such a trackable target like a B-52 flying directly over Baghdad considering the anti aircraft infrastructure that still remains. B-52s are just so huge, slow, and trackable. Fighters are capable of better self defense.
I don't know, I hear they were gonna use the B52s with guided bombs. Its possible. From as high as the drop em, they're probably pretty safe. Remember, they were gonna use those EMP warhead to take out radar tracking and communications. If they have been using those already for a few days, there is no reason the B52s couldn't be used. Of course, I'm assuming they actually worked, and it was just propaganda and disinformation to scare them into surrendering Ya always gotta stay objective i guess
They won't use EMP munitions near population centers. They would destroy all civilian electronics with a mile. That would kill the lights, hospitals, radios ... Their use was declared a no no a while back because we are trying to minimize the impact to the civilian infrastructure.
...now isolated divisions in the field? ... absolutely.
I'd have to think the microwave radiation used to take out all the circuits could have some nasty side affects on living tissue as well. They never discussed that issue either really, at least not to my knowlege.
Take a look. The power is still on in Baghdad. Why? SO they Iraqis can keep their cell phone in working order & we don't wanna rebuild everything. If it get sshitty, that may change but for the moment you're watching one of the most careful destructions in history.
