Monitor settings

I'm searching now, but ....
I have a problem periodically where there is a newer/higher Hz
monitor on a computer, and I hookup an old one to do diagnostics.
The setting for the display are higher on Hz than the monitor
I'm hooking up can handle, so it scrambles it.
Some times I can see well enough to use a mouse and fix the setting to work,
but sometimes it so scrambled that I can't do anything with it.

Of coarse if I startup in safe mode it works, but like in 2000 I don't
see where I can change it so that it stays when I reboot in reg mode.

Is there a hotkey combo to change the res?
or maybe is there a way to make it stay in a certain res after safe-mode.
or to reset the settings or something.

I couldn't comprehend your post. The machine boots with a refresh rate that's out of the monitors range?

What used to work for me (and I don't know if it will since I no longer fix puters) is to boot into safe mode, and modify the resolution and refresh rate (selecting 60Hz is always a good idea) while in there, it will ask you if you agree that this changes apply to the normal configuration, just say yes, reboot and you're done.

Also, if the refresh rate list shows no values, select adapter default, AFAIK that one will set to the lowest value.

Hope it works.

Well I found an artical that said on 2000, and xp, I can go in VGA mode,
and change it and it'll stay, but I'd like to find out how to do it in 98 too.

Yep, it won't hold in safe mode on 2000/xp.
That might still be the way for 98 though.

What monitor are you using?
Have you tried installing the windows default svga 1024x768 or 1280x1024 drivers? These are different than the standard vga driver. It might accept those and they should by default be set at 60hz.

To do this in xp you have to scroll down past the flatscreen drivers in the drivers list.

The "vga mode" worked fine in 2000. I got it to set.
I don't thing 98 has that option, but I think "safe mode" might work on it.
I'll try 98 later.

BTW, I had a newer HP 17" on it, and switched to a Dell vi14xx.

I think besides the HZ, that the smaller old monitor couldn't handle 1024x768.
The Hz were set to 85, and I had to change it to 60Hz@800x600.
