monitoring software/keystroke logger

I think we have a need here at work for some monitoring software and/or a keystroke logger...

I had a laptop that mysteriously disappeared the other day. A friend of mine at work had a program called "homing pidgeon" that you can install and it will run silently and email you every time the computer is connected to the internet with a bunch of info-IP address, service provider, etc. Pretty handy for a stolen laptop. But the program pinned the CPU at 100% so we decided not to go with it.

I was thinking that something similar or some kind of keystroke logging program might work if it will automatically email information like the IP, internet service provider, etc. Any suggestions? Freeware maybe? I'm not above paying for it, I'd like to try it first though.

Don't know about any, though I know that both Java and PHP (Flash) can check yout IP addy for you and create an email with that info as it's subject line. Lemme look and see what I can find f'r ya.

Don't know of any, but I'd like to know which one you go with...see how you like it. :) Its an interesting idea.

Thanks Mr Bish! I'm looking into those too. Mirlyn, the program I tried to load before was "Homing Pigeon", here's the link to it: http://www.zeasoft.com/products/hpgn.shtml

It's pretty wild, what it can do. It will even survive a hard drive reformat, if you can believe it. And the price is right too. Maybe I'll see if the 100% CPU utilization was a fluke and download the trial. The website is pretty rinky dink but I might give it a try anyway.

I also found, through that site, a website where you can list and look up stolen equipment. Pretty handy... I'm gathering information on the two laptops that have been stolen from us in the past month and put them up on there. http://www.stolencomputers.org
