ok this is strange, today i've had two seperate computers (my laptop and now my desktop) go apeshit when i try downloading with mozilla. when i try with my laptop xwindows kills completely and restarts. now, when i try with my desktop mozilla just locks up? if it had just been one i would have chalked it up to software flakiness, but two systems?

PLEASE, don't call it xwindows !!!!! ;)

It is X Window (singular)

can't remember if i did or not, that would have been the smart thing to do. I think I tried sending sig HUP to gdm, not sure if that completely restarts X or not.

Just go to another term and type in:

init 3

This will drop you to multiuser commandline and shutdown x.

After your back at a prompt as root type in:

init 5

This will bring x back up.

Hope this helps.

yup, that's what i should have done, unfortunately when you're really hot and tired, logical thinking doesn't always prevail.
