Does anyone here collect SHNs or FLAC?

Shorten (.shn) is an audio compression scheme that is used to compress audio (.wav) files losslessly. This means that after you decompress a Shorten file, everything that was in the original .wav is there. This is unlike MP3, in which the compression step throws away information that can never be recovered.

it's open source? any links? sounds interesting

that's one thing i dislike about mp3's...they have a certain loss of quality..which can go quite far

SHNs and FLAC are mostly used for live performances of bands like Grateful Dead, Phish etc. Bands that allow their music to be traded.

SHN is not opensource, however FLAC is.

i only knew the grateful dead when i looked after seeing the post on slashdot (think it was slashdot) as well...

how do the file sizes compare to mp3 or ogg anyway? does it perform much better than wav+zip?

there's probably a nice chart someone i haven't looked for yet...
