Literacy: definition: age 15 and over can read and write

total population: 98%

male: 100%

female: 97% (1989 est.)

1989 estimate...........tthe times of the USSR :p

source
CIA world fact book (aka yank modified statistics to make other countries look bad :p )

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

ok, source is good :D

But LL didn't say anything about literacy...you did....he said something about being able to afford books :p

no need to afford books if your country can give you all the knowledge you need :D

yeah, I just loooooooooove one-sided information....

I wouldn't be satisfied if I got all the knowledge from my government. People are biased. People give the wrong information.
I like to see things from different angles, not just follow on what my government tells me what to do, and what is right or wrong :)

i said knowledge, not news

in capitalism, 2+2 = 4,
in socialism 2+2 = 4

that's biased? :p

I know you said knowledge :)

But how does one receive knowledge if one cannot buy books? Most likely by government controlled media? They need a medium to reach the people, don't they? :)

Well, Government ALWAYS tells you lies, don't matter in what country you live...

Hehehe, there's a certain truth in that statement :)
Although the governments like to refer to that as modified truths to keep the people happy ;)

But this was about books being turned upside down...and it turns out into this...commies are everywhere :p

j/k fella's ;)

No no no, you've got it wrong. Russians don't *read* the newspaper, they use it to wipe their asses because they don't have any toilet paper! They should have been asked if they *read* the paper, not *use* the paper. ;)

Seriously, my boyfriend has told me that they didn't have toilet paper in Russia for a long time and that's what people do--use newspaper instead. Poor man's tp if you will. That's just one of the many reasons his family came here. Go to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn and ask them how much communism did for Russia. :)

yeah, i know the story of USSR and the socialism there, not a good thing at all.

but still, i think is a good idea if "you make it right"
