Maybe every place should just do what I do ALL THE TIME. Whenever I get any large bill, I look for ALL the signs (short of the detector pen) that it's a real bill.
I look for the blue and red threads, the watermark image (if it's new enough), the security strip, etc.
Just about every single 20 I've been given lately is new enough to have the watermark image. And I read that that image is very expensive to recreate.
