New Rules for Sperm Donors

To the dismay of gay-rights activists, the U.S. government is about to implement new rules recommending that any man who has engaged in homosexual sex in the previous five years be barred from serving as an anonymous sperm donor.

The Food and Drug Administration has rejected calls to scrap the provision, insisting that gay men collectively pose a higher-than-average risk of carrying the AIDS virus. Critics accuse the FDA of stigmatizing all gay men rather than adopting a screening process that focuses on high-risk sexual behavior by any would-be donor, gay or straight.

"Under these rules, a heterosexual man who had unprotected sex with HIV-positive prostitutes would be OK as a donor one year later, but a gay man in a monogamous, safe-sex relationship is not OK unless he's been celibate for five years," said Leland Traiman, director of a clinic in Alameda, California, that seeks gay sperm donors.

Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases.

Don't they have a blood-test for HIV/AIDS already in place for blood and sperm donors? Why not give the test to all donors and really be safe?

Because it is expensive and not all insurance covers it.

If you choose to engage in risky behaviors, you may have repurcussions later. Is this news to anyone among us?

Of course not butt you can't be to
careful when dealing with mentally ill people.

Yeah...but they're not checking everyone.

When I was doing my CPR classes etc...we were given a hypothetical question. You see a hooker grab her chest and fall to the floor. Do you give her mouth-to-mouth and CPR? Same situation, tho' this time its your neighbour...

Most people picked the neighbour and hesitated over the hooker. The prof then said "Now, what if I told you that your neighbour just had unprotected sex with that hooker?"

The difference. Not much.
Heterosexual men can and do get AIDS and HIV, tuberculosis etc... most IV drug users are heterosexual...

Like I said. Great idea to check your donors for diseases transmitted through sperm/blood !! Kudos!!
But why only check what amounts to only 25% of the male population?

Bish are you politically skewed or merely ignorant?

Is HIV transmitted via sperm?

Are sperm donations screened for HIV

and how is giving mouth to mouth to hookers
pertinent to this issue?

  • Neither
  • Yes
  • Depends on the place. Some places also check for genetic abnormalities in the sperm itself. Some places just say "thanks...here's your $25 and we want that magazine back".
  • Because you can place assumptions on people because of 'who they are' and be completely wrong...In this case, pass over an HIV positive man because he's straight and allow him to donate...while blocking a healthy gay man and dissalow him from donating.

The only assumption I make is:

I ain't swappin' body fluids with no body
'cept the wife.

So the HIV virus squirms it's widdle way into the
spermy cells?!? It isn't merely present in the fluids
that transport the little swimmer doods?

I find it impossible to believe there is ANY centre
that wouldn't screen for the virus.

Unless the virus was inside the sperm there would
be zero chance of transfer.

How many lesbians would want so called Homo sperm?

Nah...the fluid is just a sucrose solution (despite what women say about the taste). Only the sperm carries the virii.

ultrafeminist lesbians? Actually...they'd want the two-ova solution. That guarantees only female babies.
