Southern Discomfort
Edmunds’ Insideline says Chrysler is passing up a monster marketing opportunity with the upcoming release of the Dukes of Hazzard remake because it doesn’t want to be associated with the Confederate flag atop the Dukes’ car.

In the original television series, the boys drove a 1969 Dodge Charger with a Confederate flag on top dubbed the General Lee. Chrysler says it talked about a marketing tie-in for its 2006 model of the Charger, but couldn’t cope with the connection to the flag.

"They gave us the treatment for the movie and talked about a marketing deal, but we said we can't participate if you keep the Confederate flag," Jason Vines, Chrysler Group vice president of communications, told Inside Line. "It's offensive to a lot of people. But they [Warner Bros.] said 'no.' We still get a mention of the Charger in the movie, but we couldn't do anything beyond that."

**end**

I knew there was a reason I never buy Chrysler products. Well, besides the fact that by and large they are junk that is.

"It's offensive to a lot of people."

So are a lot of other things on television. Homosexuals are offensive to me, so I don't watch Will & Grace. Bet that doesn't stop Chrysler from advertising on it though. Fear Factor is the most offensive piece of filth ever conceived for TV. Bet Chrysler likes them ratings enough to get past the offensiveness though.

Call it what it is. It's a bias that Chrysler can spin doctor into a facade of PC morality. You don't want to be associated with it? Fine. Free country for the most part we live in. Just content yourself with lower sales down here as a result. I plan to do my part to lower them by letting everyone I know who happens to be in the market for a vehicle know that Chrysler is on record as being anti-South. I might not hurt much...maybe half a dozen cars or so. But it'll be that many. Oh, and that 2002 Chrysler Sebring we've been considering trading for? Forget it. We'll go back to Mazda 626 shopping now. Hate it for ya.

Well said, SnP!

**Devil's Advocate ... then again, not everyone knows of the history behind the Conf. flag and Gen. Lee. It's easy to shy away from something which is erroniously associated with slavery and often enough...the KKK.

Hey, I'm doin' my part there too!

I know about the heritage behind the flag, too, but you have to realize that the six cars they won't sell in your area is far outweighed by the thousands they might not be able to sell in, say, California, New York, etc. You're completely missing the mark with accusing them of being anti-South. They're pro-profit. They'd hire people to club baby seals and give little old ladies wedgies if they thought it would move some more cars. Morals have nothing to do with it.

Well thank the good Lord they didn't try to do the
movie with a car without the flag on it.

Must be that good old profit motive at work there too, Huh?

Or a Car named General Grant :p

Well then they'd have to use a 'different' flag?

I ain't missing the mark at all. I am all too aware of their reasoning. I'm used to it. That don't mean I have to like it, support their company, or keep my mouth shut about it. Complacency gets you nowhere.

So how does your theory hold with the other examples I provided? To shy away from one while flocking to another is not bias? I think I might be closer to the mark than comfort will allow us to admit.

Then again...why bother? It's just a few people it impacts, right? Certainly no one important, like the people in California or New York... :bs:

wow if you think about a small subset of the 300 million people in this country getting their tidy whities all inna bunch over a 'movement' that was defeated in a war that killed over six hundred thousand of our citizens 140 years ago

makes you wonder what new minority we can think of next

To shy away from one to flock to one other is bias. But to shy away from one to flock to thousands is economics. You're taking it personally, but there's nothing personal about it. It's all about the Benjamins.

"Flock"??? People are not sheep!

No wait, I take that back...

(Atlanta) June 21, 2005 - Atlanta based "Turner South" wanted to know how Southerners feel about the upcoming Dukes of Hazzard movie, so they conducted a survey. They looked at a wide range of topics from the Confederate Flag to the actors in the movie.

In the new version, Daisy Duke is played by singer turned actress Jessica Simpson. Turner South asked Southerners who they thought should have been given roles.

Southerners picked Katie Holmes to play Daisy. Apparently all the talk about her engagement to Tom Cruise is paying off. She beat out Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, and Scarlett Johansson as top picks.

The movie could have Dukes of Hazzard fashion coming back. 38% of Southerners in the survey say those short shorts known as Daisy Dukes should come back in style.

The new movie has the roles of Bo and Luke Duke, performed by Johnny Knoxville who is best known for doing outrageous stunts for an MTV show. Seann William Scott who became famous for roles in American Pie and Dude Where's My Car also stars.

According to Southerners in the survey, Matthew McConaughey and Luke Wilson would have been a better fit for the roles. Other popular duos for Bo and Luke were Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller and Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kutcher.

The survey didn't just look at actors. When asked about the Confederate Flag on top of the General Lee, 76% said leave it on the car for the remake.

Turner South also asked if the characters are offensive. Most people said they are not, but more than half said they do not accurately represent Southern culture.

The Turner South survey also looked at other TV shows Southerners would like to come back as movies. Apparently people want to see Knight Rider, MacGyver, Magnum, PI, and the A-Team all re-made into Hollywood movies.

Wake up, Inky. Nobody cares if a Confederate memorial is defaced.

Now, if it had been a white Southerner wearing a t-shirt with the rebel flag on it in public, heads would roll.

I give up, man. Y'all can have it.

Weird kinda spin, eh?

"An earlier draft of the policy included specifics of a Confederate flag, swastikas, iron crosses, six-pointed stars, five-pointed stars and double lightning bolts. However, Dalton said the specifics were removed because it would be harder to monitor all the different symbols, such as on a shirt or an earring."

Equating the Conf. Flag with Nazi Germany insignias, pentacles and the Star of David?

Instead of reading anti-South overtones into something that's really a purely financial decision, here's something that's worth the effort to be pissed off about.
"All are white."

That might have something to do with the material they're carved from... dya think? I'm wondering if more people would've been offended if one of the figures had been carved with 'black' features.
