Now I see a use for a hummer

European traffic planners are dreaming of streets free of rules and directives. They want drivers and pedestrians to interact in a free and humane way, as brethren -- by means of friendly gestures, nods of the head and eye contact, without the harassment of prohibitions, restrictions and warning signs.

A project implemented by the European Union is currently seeing seven cities and regions clear-cutting their forest of traffic signs. Ejby, in Denmark, is participating in the experiment, as are Ipswich in England and the Belgian town of Ostende.

The utopia has already become a reality in Makkinga, in the Dutch province of Western Frisia. A sign by the entrance to the small town (population 1,000) reads "Verkeersbordvrij" -- "free of traffic signs." Cars bumble unhurriedly over precision-trimmed granite cobblestones. Stop signs and direction signs are nowhere to be seen. There are neither parking meters nor stopping restrictions. There aren't even any lines painted on the streets.

I love the concept. Reality will cost how many lives?

It's not hard to see through...
The trend in a lot of countries are cars getting smaller, it would not be to dificult to downsize the streets to acomodate the smaller cars and not the larger...

That's how they drive in Mexico, sort of...

BTW, I assume you mean a Hummer, I can always see the use for a hummer. :blow:

Hey man, it works. We don't need stinking signs, we have common sense :p

The only worthy signs are those that give you directions. Who needs a damn stop sign on an intersection if you already know you must stop?

Seriously, I was about to post that the whole country was just like that, but you beat me to it
