During 2003 an estimated 211,300 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States. NBCAM encourages all women to recognize the importance of early detection by participating in National Mammography Day on October 17, 2003.

Everyone knows or will know someone who will get Breast Cancer within the next 5 years. That's a harsh reality. We all have close female friends and family, wether that is your mother, sister, aunt, cousin or spouse. I have personally felt the terror of breast cancer because one of my aunts had it and had to have a double-massectomy because of it. My sister was just recently checked for lumps (luckily, they were non-malignant).

If you have the chance...buy the pink ribbon, wear it. It's not especially macho-looking guys...but it will tell every woman around you that you care about their health to grit your teeth and wear one.

On this I can agree and support 100%.

Quick story.

I get "floated" to the oncology unit (that is when you are a Nurse and get forced to work on a different unit).

I am used to ICU so I got there and was like. "WTF is there no suction in these rooms...I hate not having cardiac monitors...the dammed supply cart is missing so much stuff its not even funny..."

I couldnt find anything, I was pissed for getting floated...and other than there skills with high dose chemo regimens...I was quickly coming to the conclusion that floor nurses were undertrained and dangerous ("floor nurses" is what the ICU folks call non ICU nurses).

Anyway, I wasnt used to having 8 patients to care for so I was on the run.

I pop into this one room (some kinda cancer the report I got from the previous shift sucked big time).

I was dont a quick assessment (looking for anything going on her that might need to be addressed) and she...

Stands up collapses into my arms...and begins screaming and crying.

Her words: I just had a child I dont want to die right now.

Shit I cant even type it without crying.

It hit me so off gaurd...Ive had nightmares about it.

It was Breast cancer....

If any ladies need help with the exams, I do make housecalls.

My family has a long history of breast cancer, it's actually very scary.

My family does volenteer work for Gilda's house, a breast cancer orginization.

And next year I might do the shave to save (I'll let deBish explain what that is) if I can earn enough money

Well, I have found a tiny bump that I'm a bit concerned about ;)
I'll be right over baby, i've heard people complain about PT not going all the way with the treatment.

*puts on Pink Ribbon of Caring and flies over to Alpha's house*

i think breast cancer is one of the only cancers that no one in my family has had....so, i'll prolly get it. murphy's law, and cancer runs rampant in my family...but, first sign of trouble - off they go...get me some nice fake ones. i am growing my daughters hair long so when it hits over ten inches from the shoulder i will take them to the place where they cut it to make pediatric wigs for cancer patients. apparently it is harder to find hair for kids wigs.
