And they had a right to protest, not necessarily a right to be assholes though.

Still, your political beliefs on the subject are not an excuse for vandalism. Gato, regardless of the interest in the machinery or the history, if you display the Enola Gay pretty much everyone is going to equate it with the atomic bomb. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Still no excuse for vandalism regardless of your opinion on the act. Quick, anyone but Gato, name the plane that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki.

yes but if you go to any museum, they give a good part of the history. the Air/Space Museum has good records for teh planes mentioned as well as the parts and what it was used for and such. im pretty sure they will give all the info outside the bomb.

I certainly don't mean to imply that what the protesters did was right, but as I said and as Squiggy said, that is not just a B-29 sitting there, that is THE B-29 that dropped the bomb. It will always be known as such. To display the technical advances, any B-29 would have done. To display the horrific power of an atomic bomb, this one was chosen.

shit, even i know what the name 'enola gay' means when it comes to planes, and i'm just a slack foreigner.
begs the question how did the museum curators think that such a famously known plane would get ignored as 'just another b-29'. they must have known that putting it on show would get it more media attention by reputation alone. they seem happy to take the extra feet through the door but then go all dumb on people being upset the true nature of the planes infamy is not recognised.

every plane of that era has a unique story, in the uk at air museums often there are tales of the planes exploits, photos of its pilots and tales of heroism in black and white.
the enola gay changed history, i see no harm in acknowledging that. and if it educates a few more ignorant foreigners then all the better.
