Oil spill progression

eeyzu.jpg
I saw that movie, scary as hell.

"During the last decade, more than one billion gallons of oil spilled worldwide."

1 billion divided by 10 doesn't work out with that graph.

"Analysts for the Oil Spill Intelligence Report track oil spills of at least 10,000 gallons (34 tonnes). In their annual International Oil Spill Statistics report for 1999, they reported that in that year about 32 million gallons of oil spilled into the water or onto land"

Good year I guess?

1909, Kern County, CA. Peaked at 90-100,000 barrels per day, uncontrolled for 18 months. Approximate total of 9 million barrels / 378 million gallons spilled.

100 years later the city's in the area are just fine, life went on. we still pull oil from those fields.

Damn, there's not much info about that one online. Good bit smaller than Deepwater so far and I'm guessing it's gotta be easier to collect the oil and keep it from spreading on land. Not sure though.

Still surprising lack of info on what happened, the cleanup, or the effects from what i can find at the moment.

Try the microfiche and archival records at your local library. The dates to research are well documented so should be easy to find.

BP is shaking from the implication from different people over litigation.

Any info from them other that what they Want to share, I'm sure is being
advised against by their lawyers.

If this continues as it's going, there may be no BP.

Instead of being forthright & open, we must conceal ourselves, our actions & our motives lest they be taken & twisted by the press & the lawyers.

No wonder nothing gets done on time.

WTF is wrong with these people? Apologizing to BP? Calling it a natural disaster?

House GOP Leadership: Barton Was 'Wrong' On BP Apology -- And Spill Is A 'Natural Disaster'

House Republican leadership has a strong message for Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX): You were wrong.

They also are rather strangely referring to the disastrous Gulf Coast oil spill as the "nation's largest natural disaster." (Emphasis added).

Barton apologized to BP this morning for the "tragedy" of its $20 billion fund to pay damage claims from the Gulf Coast oil spill. Barton has since apologized for apologizing to BP. Nonetheless, Reps. John Boehner (R-OH), Eric Cantor (R-VA), and Mike Pence (R-IN) released a joint statement this afternoon calling Barton's original statements "wrong."

"Congressman Barton's statements this morning were wrong. BP itself has acknowledged that responsibility for the economic damages lies with them and has offered an initial pledge of $20 billion dollars for that purpose."

Here's the full statement:

The oil spill in the Gulf is this nation's largest natural disaster and stopping the leak and cleaning up the region is our top priority. Congressman Barton's statements this morning were wrong. BP itself has acknowledged that responsibility for the economic damages lies with them and has offered an initial pledge of $20 billion dollars for that purpose.
The families and businesspeople in the Gulf region want leadership, accountability and action from BP and the Administration. It is unacceptable that, 59 days after this crisis began, no solution is forthcoming. Simply put, the American people want all of our resources, time and focus to be directed toward stopping the spill and cleaning up the mess.

well, the Barton did backtrack a short time later, but I guess that part doesn't matter,
as long as he's in office huh?

Show me the law that authorizes President Obama to force BP to set aside any amount of money or other resource. Our President is overstpepping his authority & I'm glad someone finally called him on it.

He didn't force them by law. He asked them and they agreed.

Good stuff that. It will help a lot of people.

I know Barton got a million and a half or something in donations from BP but that doesn't give him the right to betray the American people like this.

I don't think Barton betrayed the people simple by what he said...not
nearly like the president has by what he's said And done.

Barton betrayed the people by acting as if BP shouldn't be responsible for paying for the damage they've done. The president helped the people by getting them to pay.

You must not have heard the same thing I did.
He said clearly that he thought they were responsible. He just didn't like
the way the pres. set it up with the escrow and all.
The pres. lied...again. He said it would be overseen by an independent source,
when in fact he put it under the control of a czar he appointed.

Yes, Barton's an idiot. This was a good move for the victims and a good move for BP as well.

It's going to be administered by independent an independent third party. There was no lie.

BP is the first party, the victims are the second party. Feinberg and the panel will be the 3rd party.

Feinberg has a long track record in working on high profile claims like for the Sept 11 Victims Compensation Fund. Seems like a good pick.

Feinberg and the panel are part of the admin.
They are the government.
They are not independent.
Let congress pick a panel.

I don't particularly object to the pres. getting involved with the negotiations.
I would like to know if there was a threat made in that part though.

The 'means' to the 'ends', do matter.

we'll see if the money gets to where it's supposed to go....maybe, from any recipients,
but you can bet the won't be good accountability, or transparency in that event.

They are an independent 3rd party because their not BP or the victims. He's a good choice.

Feinberg has a pretty good track record with things very similar to this for the last decade. I wouldn't take that bet.
