they were secure, felt safe, and were well bonded, and it sucked...cause holy hell they'd run up and talk to anyone...they'd walk away with just anyone too. It never dawned on any of my kids till they hit 4 or 5 after years of me freaking out that a human could be a bad person.

Thats flight or fight instinct, being afraid of something unknownn is self-preservation.

At the end of last winter when I got a really short haircut, shaved my beard and moustache my baby didn't recognize and refuse to any physical contact with me and it took 24 hours for her to accept that I was me.

Maybe you're just really scary looking without the extra hair. :D
