A 35-year-old Frenchwoman became both bride and widow when she married her dead boyfriend, in an exchange of vows that required authorisation from the French president.

The ceremony was performed at Nice City Hall on the French Riviera.

The deceased groom, a former policeman identified as Eric, was not present at the ceremony. He was killed by a drunk driver in September 2002.

Demichel told LCI television she was fully aware that "it could seem shocking to marry someone who is dead", but said that her fiance's absence from her life had not dimmed her feelings for him.

According to French law, a marriage between a living person and a dead person can take place as long as preliminary civic formalities have been completed that show the couple had planned to marry. Before the ceremony can take place, it must be approved by the French president.

 What the hey... Its apparently come up before seeing as they have a law on the books governing it. And being that it requires presidental approval, I seriously doubt that it can be abused.

IMHO, its not disrepectful to marriage. This kind of story actually makes me feel better about it and its concept that love trancends the life and death barrier. She better not be marrying anyone else for a long while after going to such lengths. That would seriously diminish the whole nobility of the gesture.

So Gonzie, you saying she's leading French necropheliacs to a revolution?

Maybe he wasn't even really dead....maybe he's just German

chcr, I appreciate the humor & while I agree with it in theory I have an important question...since the 70's when prayer was removed & seckshul edumacation was added, has our public school system produced better educated children?

AT...not German, Austrian :p

German....Austrian.......what's the difference? ;)

Gonz, if the removal of prayer from the school hasn't produced better educated children than before & the levels have basically remained the same, then what was the point of having it before anyway? It's not like you could pray your way through school.

The levels have dropped...no, not because of prayer but because of prevailing attitudes. They went hand in hand.

what was the point of prayer in school in the first place?

it was a bad idea, because not everyone was the same religion

But certain groups think everyone should be.

beleive me I know, there are a lot of groups that think everyone should be

"reistance is futile, you will be assimilated, now read this (bible, torah, Koran, watchtower, hubbard book) , and discover the glories of (God Yahweh, Allah, Etc.)"

I've also heard of people baptising babies who should be dead but are being kept alive (physically if not mentally) long enough for a priest to arrive and baptise them. It's a belief system...faulty, but that's it. This woman wanted to marry that man...he died before the ceremony (original date), but she still wants to marry him.

Consider it more like recieving an award posthumously. It happens all the damn time...this stiff got awarded a marriage certificate. :)
