Severe accute respratory syndrome.

Think nothing of it. No big deal, the media makes it seem bad but it's just a few thousand cases out of billions of people. Not only that but it only kills 3.5% of the people that get it.

Is this what you're thinking?
Think about this, a couple weeks ago only a few people had it and already it's into the thousands. That means it's spreading exponentially. In no time hundreds of millions could become infected. They say it's like a common cold or is actually another version of the cold virus. How many people catch a cold each year? What's 3.5% of hundreds of millions or billions? It'll be interesting to watch this play out.

I don't think the flu has a 3.5% casualty rate. Maybe it does. But i believe also that a cold is far more contagious than any flu which is where the danger lies. Also, unlike the flu sars doesn't just kill young children or the elderly it kils all people including the healthy alike.

1917-18 revisited. Fortunately, we have improved our hygiene since then. Far fewer deaths this go round.

I think a more pressing concern is the infrastructural impact it might have.

It is worse than flu - that's the point. Sort of like a "super flu". Higher casualty rate, more contagious, more robust etc.

Plain old normal flu already cripples the healthcare system here in the UK during the winter. =\

MuFu.

Plus, I think it's good that people make a big deal about it - what happens when the next mutated strain comes along which has a fatality rate of say 20% and is even more contagious?

I live in aplce that no person from any other part of the world would ever think of even driving through. I highly doubt I would ever get it.

If you're old or sick, you're fucked.

Somebody better check up on Gonzman.

the rest of you may want to read this though.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong hospitals prepared for a worst-case scenario of up to 3,000 cases of the deadly SARS virus by the end of April, as the pneumonia-like disease claimed yet another victim in Canada.

New cases in Hong Kong climbed by 42 on Sunday to 842.

and/or this

TORONTO (AP) Canadian health authorities have confirmed the death of a ninth person from a pneumonia-like illness from Asia and warned hospitals Sunday to treat anyone with a respiratory problem as a potential carrier.

The outbreak in Canada of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, is the largest outside Asia, with more than 200 probable or suspected cases and thousands of people in home quarantine.

Gonz, some people go through there. Didn't my protests make headlines two weeks ago :D I guess, not, your weather forecasting was off a bit. It was still raining quite heavily in Ft. Wayne so not too many people showed up for my war/gonzo propaganda protest :D Actually, neither did I, but I was protesting 'in my heart' while driving through :D Nah, not really, I'm not much of a protester!

Have t' dissagree with you Prof...it's far worst than the flu, in the length of it's life on non-animate objects and the fact taht it lives on after the host has died...I'll have to find the article but in a recent funeral for a SARS victim, all those that attended him funeral were asked to Quarantine themselves for 10 days.

Well, considering that they haven't even found the organism yet, your disagreement is noted for later discussion, when it might make sense.

Jan has been in contact with people from Toronto, so it's entirely possible that the damn thing could show up in BF, Florida. It's hard to tell how the thing might jump. I ain't scairt yet, but it's not something to ignore.

i heard that one of the major differences between sars and 'flu is that its not just the old and those with respiratory problems that are most suceptable, there are perfectly healthy young people dying of it as well.

maybe i just heard some bunk but i perked my ears up enough to remember

I thought they had identified the virus?

It has been identified. And although people keep comparing it to infuenzia it's actually related to or is a cold.

Not the best source, admittedly, but Howard Stern said this morning that there was some correlation between STDs (clamidia I believe he said) and contrating SARS. Maybe these were the 'perfectly' healthy people. Its too early to know whats up with this right now though. I have to agree on that. Everything is reported wrong or inaccurately on EVERYTHING in the beginning it seems.
