State of emergency declared in Gaza Strip
The Palestinian Authority has declared a state of emergency in the Gaza Strip, after the kidnapping of the territory's police chief and four French aid workers.
Middle East correspondent Mark Willacy reports:
A group calling itself the Abu al-Rish Brigades abducted four French aid workers from a cafe in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Yunis. They were freed only after the intervention of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, and UN officials. Just hours earlier Palestinian gunmen kidnapped the chief of police in Gaza, releasing him after four hours. The kidnappers say they are protesting against rampant corruption in the Palestinian Authority in Gaza. In response a state of emergency has been declared. Thousands of police have been deployed around government buildings, ministries, and the public television station. Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie has also called an emergency meeting to discuss the future of his government.

French President Jacques Chirac informed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon he is not welcome in Paris after he urged all French Jews to leave the country immediately, Israeli television reported.
Chirac had written that "after some weeks of contacts concerning such a visit it turns out that it is impossible ... and you are not welcome following your comments," according to Channel 2 television.
An Israeli foreign ministry government spokesman refused to comment on "confidential messages."
Sharon sparked anger in Paris with a speech on Sunday in which he urged all French Jews to move immediately to Israel in order to escape what he called the "spread of the wildest anti-Semitism".
The French foreign office has described Sharon's comments as "unacceptable."
