BELGRADE, Serbia (CNN) -- Serbia was in shock Wednesday after Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, who played a key role in the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic and personified the country's postwar future, was shot dead.

Djindic, 50, was hit by two bullets in the stomach and chest outside the main government building in Belgrade. He was taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save him.

Milosovich isn't a thread anymore, while in prison. I'd rather see Milosovich being sentenced life in jail than being killed. death is such an easy way for a person who ordered genocide.

BELGRADE, March 12 (Reuters) - Acting Serbian president Natasa Micic declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

The Serbian government proposed the measure, under which some civil rights can be curtailed and the army takes over police functions, at an emergency meeting earlier in the day.

"A state of emergency is declared in the territory of the Republic of Serbia," Micic said at a press conference broadcast live on television.
