Sharia Justice

can be a beautiful thing

A Muslim court in northern Nigeria has ordered that a 45-year-old man's leg be amputated as punishment for doing the same to his wife. The Upper Sharia in the town of Bauchi made the order against Adamu Hussaini Maidoya, who cut off the right leg of his wife, Amina. He accused her of infidelity, after 'over exposing' herself to a doctor to get an injection. Judge Alhaji Abdu Yerima ordered that the convict's right leg be amputated at the knee and that the person or doctor who executes the sentence should not administer anaesthetic or painkillers... Maidoya, who wept profusely during the trial, pleaded guilty but pleaded for forgiveness, saying his act was destined by God. Maidoya, a trader, also told newsmen he was neither insane nor under the influence of alcohol when he cut off his wife's leg.

Too bad we can't get that judge to sit in here a few days a week.

he got what he deserved...no one has the right to cut their spouses leg off for any reason, and this reason was rather ridiculous.

I fully agree. In fact I would consider death an equal punishment. This however, is not justice. It is vengeance.

Actually i disagre Gonzo. I think it's perfect justice. Eye for an eye er...leg.
yup....except now both of them a crippled...but then again...who stays with a man that cuts your leg off?

On a purely emotional level I praise this judgement. Rationale, however, calls it vengeance.

It in no way improves the life of the victim nor does it teach the criminal a lesson. It only creates 2 cripples & 2 victims.

I disagree that it doesn't teach the criminal a lesson. I don't think he's going to be cutting off any more of his wifes limbs. Is that not the lesson he needed to learn?

ohmigod...I agree with Gonz....:bolt:

:D

I'm torn.

Consider the fact that this decision may serve as a pretty strong deterent for anyone else thinking about doing bodily harm to a spouse. On the flip side, even in places where the death penalty is in place, people still kill.

Bottom line, violence is not a rational crime, and consequences are not usually considered before action is taken. In this case, the victim got no recompence, and as Gonz said, a second victim was created. But what's the alternative? Jail for the attacker? We all know how well THAT works. (Can you say repeat offender?)

Both systems of justice are flawed, but I can't offer any better solutions...

A better form of justice than equality? That's a toughie.

Have to agree with Gonz...the punishment may have fit the crime but it didn't accomplish anything concrete.

Perhaps a public flogging followed by having to push his wife around (ahead of him) in a wheelchair for the remainder of his days? I hear that the streets aren't wheelchair friendly. Perhpas while wearing a sign explaining why his wife has no leg?

yes. he did to her. why cant it happen to him as punishment? i personally see justice as the following: protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
