One of the Sony Vaio's at work has a slight ant infestation problem. It's under warranty so I don't want to open the case but I don't want to send it away to the mainland for two weeks either LOL .. is there a safe way for me to get rid of these damned pests? Anyone else experience this problem?

Wow, how did the owner get ants to be inside the laptop in the first place?

I would spray some pesticide in a box and put the laptop in there for a while. Then use some canned air to remove some of dead ants.

Edit: then pray to the gods some ant isn't at the proper position to make a short.

 No, no I haven't. Umm, my sense is that you need to go ahead and send it. Pretty easy to kill them, I suppose, but how would you get them out without opening the case.

we have some weird ants here that don't go for sweet things or food .. they go for warmth .. they're weird LOL ... I'll try the box thing .. I just don't want to have to send it out and the Sony guy was saying something about that not being on the warranty .. wtf? LOL .. ugh .. thanks for your help guys! You so rock.

Well, I suppose the guy is right. Ants invasion is a warranty clause I've never seen :D

And since the sony guy already told you it isn't covered, you might as well open it. It is either that or ending up with a useless laptop with a valid warranty that won't do nothing for you.

Better yet, seal it in a garbage bag with no air for a week. That way, you don't risk residue from the poison.

you may want to avoid pesticide for a number of reasons.

i would try using a sealed plastic container, place the lappy on risers of some sorts and lay down 1/4 inch of hi-% isopropyl alcohol on the bottom and seal thew box for 24 hours.

let the fumes kill e'm.

Seen it. ;) Also have seen cockroaches in a stereo equipment (a receiver). Some insects are attracted to electronic fields.

Infestations typically aren't covered. If you can do the airtight bag thing, I'd recommend that first. Best bet would be to disassemble and clean thoroughly. I'd not use anything chemical on it to avoid damage to the screen and other coatings.

You can always say that the computer has some bugs...:bolt:

Our techs leave laptops in their trucks overnight all winter. But some bugs simply sleep through it and wake up unaffected the next morning. Lack of O2 does a better job.

BWUAHAHAHA@ Gato!!!

I think I'm gonna try the plastic bag thing with the alcohol ..thanks for that, never thought of it. This weekend will be perfect since no one will use it.

So what's in it drawing the ants in the first place?

If that doesn't come out, they or some other buggie will return.

tft panels freeze. dont leave it in cold for long. *not in the frigid North, anyhow* (I've searched the net, and found nothing. Seems the net is only good for - or has any advice for - temperate-climate jockeys. Lots of "OMGZ!! My Ipod gotz all blak and quit working - Plz Hlp!", but no real answers as to temps - doesn't matter anyways - just adding my twocents)

can't take too much heat, either.. 150°F or so? they melt. A co2 tent would take care of them, without any chemical residue attacking the plastic components

grrrr .. wouldn't you know it .. I got so busy on Friday that I forgot to tent the stupid laptop .. GRRRRR .. hehehe .. will try this week and let everyone know what the outcome is .. thanks to everyone for your advice!
