There are many ways for the baby to suffocate without anyone's help. If she did not know how to clear the mucus plugs in the baby's nose and throat. If the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck.

That would present differently from smothering. You can read here about petechial hemorrhaging. This would be what would tell the coroner that the death by a lack of oxygen came from an external source. If it was the cord there will be tell-tale "cord marks" around the infants neck.

And that mark is very distinctive... unless she deliberately strangled it with it's cord. Although they can tell that too, by the depth of the impression.
