Sorry Gonz...

Racial is not bad. Too many think it is thoguh. His stand is to end the blatant racism that's shown by those who prefer to "help" by handouts as opposed to hand-ups.

He opined, which is his job. As soon as it got past the comfort mark, they panicked. People are frightened to discuss race, in any form that's not ass-kissing & that is terrible. I'm defending the right to say whatever is on your mind.

650+ stations & 20 million listeners isn't bad for a arrogant SOB with racial biases.

He's entertaining. At least that what 20 million people seem to think

i don't understand why he resigned. this is rush limbaugh. he's not afraid of a little controversy. i think the nfl can handle another one as well. it just doesn't sit right with me. howard cosell, jimmy the greek, rush limbaugh...i think every one gets too up in arms about the situation.

Beyond the race thing, his comment was just plain stupid and showed a lack of football knowledge. Donovan McNabb, overrated??? He's a top 5 QB for sure. If he had used Kordell Stewart or Aaron Brooks as an example, perhaps someone would have bought it....but Donovan McNabb??

Any team that keeps a QB around because he is black (or white) is doomed to failure. Teams are striving for one thing....a Super Bowl. They don't care about the race of any of the players, they want to win.

In my opinion, these QB's are in the Top Tier now, in no particular order...

Daunte Culpepper
Donovan McNabb
Peyton Manning
Steve McNair
Michael Vick
Drew Bledsoe

In the future, I think the following will join this group....

Carson Palmer
Byron Leftwhich
Joey Harrington
Chad Pennington
David Carr
Patrick Ramsey

I listed 12 QB's here. 7 white, 5 black. Race simply does not matter.

rrfield

of course race doesn't matter. thats not what i meant. i just meant that comments made get blown out of proportion on this issue. and that is something that both rush limbaugh AND the nfl are used to. all sports commentators have opinions of players and they are always sure to differ from one to another. how is this any different? rush never said black people couldn't or shouldn't be quarterbacks. why can't people just let it go? frigging race issue gets everyones panties in a bunch. people are people.

it was just to bad dennis miller didnt have the sense to leave before he looked even more outthere. his analogies were something crack induced most of the time. But hey he made the co anchors laugh.

Oh, I know. I remember watching one Monday night game where Dennis seemed to be paying attention to everything but the game. I wondered what the hell possessed them to put him on there, he never did seem too interested in sports.

Where are the rushing stats? Wins? Playoff wins?

I did not include Brad Johnson in my list of elite QB's but he probably deserves to be up there. I am a huge Brad Johnson fan. If the Vikings had started Johnson instead of Cunningham in '98, they would have won it all.

I'm pointing out he's average at best, with brilliant moments. That's why I looked for marquee players from about the same time. I don't pay much attention to teh Eagles but I noticed last year (year before?) that their defense was outstanding.

His QB raiting has gone up every year from 1999-2002. He was the MVP favorite in 2002 until he got injured. The other players you showed also have much better groups of receivers (Colts with Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Marcus Pollard and now Dallas Clark, formerly Qadry Ismial, Jerome Pathon, Terrance Wilkins, Ken Dilger; Browns with Kevin Johnson, Quincy Morgan and Dennis Northcut). I'd venture to say that McNabb ever having a QB raiting of over 80 is amazing considering his supporing cast, which outside of Duce Staley has been non-existant.

I am not an Eagles fan either, infact I'd like to see them miss the playoffs . I am a football fan and I will admit when a player is good even when I have a large dislike for them or their team (ehhhhm Brett Favre).

Here's a couple of interesting pieces on this story. Where's the hoopla? Where's the shouting? Where's the demand he be reinstated?

McNabb has started for the Eagles since the 2000 season. In that time, the Eagles offense has never ranked higher than 10th in the league in yards gained. In fact, their 10th-place rank in 2002 was easily their best; in their two previous seasons, they were 17th in a 32-team league. They rank 31st so far in 2003.

In contrast, the Eagles defense in those four seasons has never ranked lower than 10th in yards allowed. In 2001, they were seventh; in 2002 they were fourth; this year they're fifth. It shouldn't take a football Einstein to see that the Eagles' strength over the past few seasons has been on defense, and Limbaugh is no football Einstein, which is probably why he spotted it.

To measure positive news coverage, I quickly put ten research assistants to work on a Nexis search, which is a computerized search of newspaper stories across the country. They looked at the coverage received by the 36 quarterbacks who played during the first four weeks of this season. (The articles were from the day of their first game to the day after their last game during the period.) To try to make the categorization of news stories objective, 23 phrases were picked to identify positive descriptions of a quarterback and 23 phrases for negative ones. Positive phrases included words such as "brilliant," "agile," "good," "great," "tough," "accurate," "leader," "intelligent," or "strong arm." Negative phrases included "overrated," "erratic," "struggling," "bad," "weak arm," or "mistakes." Obviously the media involves more than newspapers, but this is measurable and it is not clear why newspapers would be so different from the rest of the media.

We then identified news stories where these phrases appeared within 50 words of a quarterback's name. Each story was read to check that the phrases were indeed used to describe the "quarterback" and to make sure that the word "not" did not appear before the different phrases. Depending on whether positive or negative words were used to describe the quarterback, stories were classified as positive, negative, or falling into both categories.

The evidence suggests that Rush is right, though the simplest measures indicate that the difference is not huge. Looking at just the averages, without trying to account for anything else, reveals a ten-percent difference in coverage (with 67 percent of stories on blacks being positive, 61 percent for whites).

*sigh* McNabb is one of 11 players on the offense. If he had anything resembling a group of WRs, the offense would be in the top 5. He almost singlehandedly took the Eagles to two NFC title games (on offense that is). No one has ever denied that the Eagles have a good defense.

61% to 67%? Seems trivial to me. If you take out the Bengals QBs (who have been all white or the past few years, except for Akili Smith, who hardly played) I bet these numbers get even closer. I am also willing to bet that Michael Vick was the object of an unproportionate ammount of praise. Who is going to deny him his props?

rrfield

Its ok really. You dont have to point out 7 average to talented black QBs who are currently playing to prove what great QBs black people make.

But the fact is...thats a difficult position for them to get on equal footing (I have no idea why) compared to the total domination we see in other positions.

Its not complicated to see the trend and it isnt stereo typing when the trend honestly exsists...its called "The truth"

Edit: Note to pute toot: This edit was necessary.

How much football do others on this board actually watch? Not trying to be a smart-ass or anything, I really want to know just so I know where everyone is coming from.

Less than previous points in my life.

I tend to keep an eye on the stats, especially the Raiders (we now know how old is too old)

My sundays are filled with football. I usually go to a bar here in town that has TV's setup all over the walls with every game on. I focus on the Vikings, but I at least glance at the other games from time to time.

I went to Minnesota last weekend, saw the Vikes pound the snot out of the 9ers. I have 2 more Viking trips planned for this season, one in Chicago, one in St. Louis. I may catch a Colts or Bengals game later this season, just because.

I am in 2 fantasy leagues (fantasy football: what happens when geeks watch sports) so I hvae to pay attention to almost all players. I am the comish of one league, so I get to see every player that is started for a week's stats.

I like the foosball. SKOL Vikings.
