steering and traction protection

And since from a quick little bit of research it seems that the 2005 Mazda6 V6 wagon has a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds I HIGHLY doubt you hit 40 in 3 seconds...

Probably not... probably more like 3.5 seconds or so. 40-60 might take more time than 0-40 because of gearing, shift points, etc.

Soooo I didn't buy the tires last year...and now I'm gonna have to pay Calgary prices for them...hindsight is 20/20...if I had bought them last year I coulda had them put on before shipping my car and left my all seasons in Ont and then if I stayed I coulda got them shipped out with the rest of my stuff and if I go back to Ont I could had the all seasons put on when I got back there...but noooo I had to NOT get them and now I NEED them...and BLAH

Does everyone in Canada get winter tires and wheels?

I hardly see any cars around here swap different tires for summer and winter.

I would guess people in Maine do the same thing. Winter tires grip better in the cold, but grip so well in the summer that it makes sweet, sweet rape to your gas mileage.

Not everyone in Canada gets them, no. I didn't get them last winter and I was fine. They plow the roads really well in the Toronto area and my all seasons are awesome. In areas with a lot of snow or areas where the roads are not well plowed (which is the case here) then they're a very good idea because they have much better grip than all seasons.

That said, people who have black steel rims anyway really don't need a second set of rims unless they want them for easy swaps...I have nice rims that I don't wanna ruin so I'm going to get mine put on black steel rims (and also for easy swaps).

I just priced some tires...$1200, all in, including rims...the place I priced at will switch them on my car for free every spring and fall...they have stores in Ont too (so if I decide to go back I'm covered)...steeper than I was expecting.

So 1200 is reasonable? The rims are steep but there is ONE rim you can get for my car...stupid 4 bolt design...

The ones I priced btw are nokian tyres - hakkapeliitta RSi

I went in asking about MIchelin X Ice (best rated on many review sites) and the guy said these are way better...and at $4 extra a tire I can't go wrong.

Well, no ... $300 a corner isn't anything I would pay. I paid $110 a tire for the van, and I expect those are quite a bit bigger tires. That would leave over $150 per rim ... which is outright theft by anyone's definition. You're only wanting steel rims for winter, not polished magnesium spinners.

I've got a set of fabulous cut painted wheels for $77 and Blizzack tires at $58 for your car over at Autopartsway.ca. Add taxes and shipping and I think I can save you about half a grand. Interested?

For a bit more, you can get the Blizzack WS-60 which has as good a rating or better.

If I couldn't get Toyo, I'd get Blizzack. I've had them and loved them too. They don't hold up as well as the Toyos to warmer roads, since they use a porous rubber compound instead of a fibre ingrained one .... but winter's winter. I drove in the summer to Ga on Toyos ...I sure wouldn't on Blizzacks ... but I've driven to the cottage in winter on both, and would do so again. I've no knowledge of the Nokian tires.

No, the ones I'm getting I am gettng swapped on and off for free twice each year...and I know I could get cheaper but these are good tires and everyone at my company paid about the same so it's not unreasonable for Calgary.
