Baltimore Mayor Indicted for Perjury, Theft
Mayor Sheila Dixon allegedly went to Best Buy and spent gift cards for needy families on a digital camcorder and a PlayStation 2 controller, among other goods.

Friday, January 09, 2009

BALTIMORE -- From Best Buy to Saks Fifth Avenue, from Old Navy to Giorgio Armani, prosecutors allege Mayor Sheila Dixon went shopping in a big way with other people's money.

Dixon was indicted Friday on 12 counts, including perjury and theft, mostly for activity that occurred while she was City Council president. And most of the charges against her suggest an affinity for both high-end and big-box retail.

At one point in December 2005, the indictment says, Dixon brazenly called an unnamed developer and hit him up for $500 worth of Best Buy gift cards, which she said would be donated to needy families.

Instead, five days later -- and a week before Christmas -- the future mayor allegedly strolled into a Best Buy in downtown Baltimore and spent 19 of the 20 gift cards, walking out with a digital camcorder and a PlayStation 2 controller, among other goods.

Similar scenarios played out several times, always around Christmas, always with gift cards that, at least in name, were supposed to be handed out to the poor, the indictment says.

"The allegation is that she stole from little children at Christmastime," said David Gray, a law professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. "The indictment is alleging that she was a Grinch of the worst kind."

The indictment against Dixon was the culmination of a wide-ranging investigation of city government that lasted nearly three years. It includes no allegations that she let cash or gifts influence the way she did her job. But at the very least, it hints that the mayor, whose salary is $151,700, likes to shop but would rather not have to pay.

The charges against Dixon include four counts of perjury and two counts of theft under $500. The perjury counts relate to her failure to disclose gifts from Ronald H. Lipscomb, a developer who received tax breaks from the city.

Lipscomb, who dated Dixon briefly in late 2003 and early 2004, first bought gift cards for Dixon under the auspices of handing them out to the poor in December 2004, according to the indictment. Dixon held onto them for a year before using them during her Christmas shopping in 2005, the indictment says.

...

(The fourteenth paragraph of the story) Dixon, a 55-year-old Democrat, served on the City Council from 1987 through 2007 and as council president from 1999 through 2007. She became mayor in January 2007, finishing the term of Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley, and was easily elected to a full, four-year term later that year.

It took fourteen paragraphs for her political affiliation to be mentioned. The first word of most stories about Senator Larry Craig was "Republican".

Interesting, that.

Got any proof that "The first word of most stories about Senator Larry Craig was "Republican"?

Do you think mayor/senator makes any difference in coverage?

Do you think there aren't enough republican scandals?

So no proof that "The first word of most stories about Senator Larry Craig was "Republican"?

Thought so.

Mayor /Senator obviously does make a difference as one is higher ranking and a bigger story.

Newsbusters is funny site.

spike, you know damn good & well that when the story hurts Republicans, that fact is mentioned early & often.

<sigh>

None of the following are from Newsbusters.

The Hill -- (First paragraph) Larry Craig’s guilty plea will stand—probably with a wide stance—a Minnesota appeals court ruled today, rejecting the Idaho Republican's attempt to withdraw it. Craig, who is retiring from the Senate, had argued that his case was not fully investigated, while his lawyer maintained that there was “no factual basis” for the plea. The court disagreed.

Minneapolis Star Tribune -- (lead) Craig asks Appeals Court to toss guilty plea
An attorney for the Idaho Republican senator sought to have the disorderly conduct conviction dismissed for lack of evidence. The three-judge panel will rule within 90 days.

Roll Call -- (first paragraph) Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call on Monday afternoon.

ABC -- (second paragraph) "Good Morning America" spoke exclusively with Craig's two children, who are standing by the Republican senator.

Chicago Tribune -- (first, second, third paragraph) A little more than two weeks after announcing he would resign from Congress following a guilty plea arising from a bathroom sex scandal, Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) walked back into the Senate chamber Tuesday and cast two votes.

Craig, who is trying to undo his plea and fight the charges against him, spoke to a few colleagues on the floor, but mostly stood in the back of the chamber on the Republican side of the aisle. Neither Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) nor Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), spoke to him. Both have been highly critical of Craig, with McConnell calling his actions "unforgivable."

At 12:40 p.m., Craig strode out of the chamber, walking briskly down the hall to the Mansfield room for lunch with his Republican colleagues.

Of course, your ready response will be "But in none of those stories was "Republican" the first word." Remember hyperbole? Let me spell it for you:

H-Y-P-E-R-B-O-L-E

HYPERBOLE

In the meantime, a very lengthy 1,700 word article in The New Republic on the Edwards sex scandal HERE never mentions his party affiliation.

Raleigh News & Observer -- (22nd paragraph) On Thursday, Aug. 7, we published a front-page story with prominent Democrats saying Edwards needed to address the allegations if he hoped to have a role at the upcoming convention.

New York Daily News -- Never mentions Edward's political affiliation. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/editor/how-we-reported-the-edwards-affair

Charlotte Observer -- (second paragraph) With just two weeks before their national convention, a number of Democrats are saying Edwards needs to publicly address National Enquirer stories that have alleged he had an affair with a campaign worker and fathered her baby.

New York Times -- Never mentions Edward's political affiliation though the story is over 1,600 words in length. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/15/us/politics/15edwards.html?hp

Ok, so what you need is a democratic senator with a scandal equivalent to Larry Craig's covered in an entirely different way by the same outlets.

Do you have any of that? I'd love to use some real logic instead of crap you pulled from newsbusters. I'll be looking for that.

I assume if I find any artiicle that neglects to mention republican until the 2nd paragraph that you will admit being wrong right?

jiminy cricket. you asked for examples. he gave them to you aplenty, avoiding sites you personally dont like. still, you ball up with your thumb in your mouth and grasp your delusion. your incurable

THIS POST was about nothing but a democratic senator with a scandal equivalent to Larry Craig's ... John Edwards.

So now you want me to get you comparative stories from the same outlet ie:NYT about the two scandals to see how the party affiliation was covered?

This is what I mean about how you try to keep other posters chasing their own tail while you sit back laughing. No proof; no story; no link; no testimony is good enough. You are the epitome of the "Don't try to confuse me with facts. My mind is made up." crowd. I know. I know. There is no such formal organization as the "Don't try to confuse me with facts. My mind is made up." crowd. that should save you those keystrokes.

That's why I keep him on ignore. I let him out once in a while to see if he's changed; and for the entertainment and enlightenment of the rest of you.

So far its the same ol' same ol'.

BOO freaking HOO!!!!:crying6:
Is life so boring that the only thing FOX can find to gripe about is this??

It would be interesting to take a national poll to find out how earth shattering this is in comparison to the ills taking place in the world today. Does anyone really care how many times a republican or democrat is accused of some wrongdoing and when they do, find grave concern in the media failing to designate political affiliation of the individual?

I can see it now in a hypothetical media report. "jimpeel, a republican, was cited for making an improper turn. Peel , a republican, was driving....... ." OR, "Frank Probity, an independent, was arrested for chewing gum in the Rialto theatre. Probity, an independent ...... ."

And where would we be without FOX to spread the biased decrying main stream media and how mistreated the republican party is. It had to be FOX as the one to consider a comparison. The most biased media in the world. Well, maybe not in the world because there is still WorldNet, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter, Hannity, Beck, Ingraham, and Malkin to spread the whiney syndrome of how the "poor ole republicans are getting mistreated by main stream media", again.

There really is more to life than counting how many times the media mentions, or fails to mention, political affiliation each time an article appears in some form of media. If felt necessary, whiners international can always revert to the Clinton administration and how "Slick Willie" was censured and convicted of perjury. There now. Does that make you poor mistreated republicans feel better???
OH CRAP !! As a means of appeasement, I didn't mention it is "Slick Willie", the democrat.
Sorry about that.

"D" is the new scarlet letter.

It would seem more realistic and logical to think "R" is the new scarlet letter. That is of course, unless you are one of those who believe everything republican is a-okay, hunkey-dorey all the way.

The constant whining from FOX about main stream media sounds like a ploy by them to discombobulate listeners into thinking all the ills of America are the fault of the "D"'s. Funny how that works. Kinda like this administration trying to make Americans believe they are being served chicken salad instead of the chicken sh1t proffered as good government and no untoward activity within the ranks.

No, the scarlet letter really is, "R".

quid pro quo.

otherwise, our esteemed media outlets are spreading propoganda instead of information.

quid pro quo.

otherwise, our esteemed media outlets are spreading propoganda instead of information.

So, why do you think FOX was given special recognition yet FOX is the one doing all the whining about the other main stream media.

No quid pro quo there. More like the FOX/republican mantra of, " don't do as I do, do as I say".

Ironically, when a news organization attacks both sides, it's called an arm of the Republican party. When only the right in under assault, it's called media.

If they'd do their job & report facts & leave the judgements to the people, we'd be back toward square one. There was never an unbiased media. They used to write less op-ed pieces & call it news though.

Legislators vote to impeach Blagojevich

The Illinois governor says he'll continue to fight charges. His trial in the state Senate is to start Jan. 26.

By Ray Long and Rick Pearson
January 10, 2009

Reporting from Springfield, Ill. -- The Illinois House voted Friday to impeach disgraced Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and send him to trial in the Senate with the aim of removing the two-term Democrat from state public office forever.

The governor's Dec. 9 arrest on corruption charges was the trigger, but lawmakers unloaded six years of grievances in a swift 114-1 vote. Their action made the state's 40th governor the first in state history to be impeached....

No Federal Charges Against Spitzer

By Sewell Chan

Updated, 4:06 p.m. | The United States attorney in Manhattan, Michael J. Garcia, announced on Thursday afternoon that no federal charges will be filed against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer of New York, who resigned in March in a scandal over his role as a customer of a prostitution ring.

After 14 months in office, Mr. Spitzer, a Democrat, resigned on March 12, 2008, after his role as a client of the prostitution ring, known as the Emperor’s Club V.I.P., became known. Mr. Spitzer’s resignation brought an abrupt close to a tenure marked by an almost unbroken string of stumbles and frustrations....

Yeah it NEVER works the other way. We all know that the Liberal media is out to discrace and destroy Republicans at all costs! They always sugarcoat Democrats involved in scandal!

Corruption and scandal are very bipartisan.
