Na and Ku'u, are ya'll actually leaving a dead candidate on the ballot? I heard about this, but was skeptical enough to verify it for myself.

Gee, that wouldn't be to circumvent the electoral process and appoint a congress member, would it?

well ... the constitution of the united states says that once the deadline is passed, the names can not be changed ... she died after the deadline and the ballots have been printed... what's weirder though is that we have to hold a special election to fill the last 5 weeks at a cost of $2 million ... that's also in the US constitution ... hmm... $2 million for 5 weeks ... just doens't sound like a good deal ...

We can't appoint anyone. None of this is by the will of Hawai'i - it's the law of the United States of America.

I feel badly for her and her family though ... she's worked hard in Politics which is hard here in Hawai'i for a woman ... and what brings her down? chicken pox.

Stupid phreakin governemnt :grumpy: I'm really sorry Mink has passed away, she was a good person, but shit.

They want to hold a $2million special election to fill her seat for the next 5 weeks of session  It's only 5 phreakin weeks, do we have to spend upward of 2 mill on that?

AND, then they want us to vote for her on the 5th ... which will make us have to hold ANOTHER special election to fill that seat

In addition to vowing to rally the public to vote for Mink, U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye, Hawai'i's leading Democrat, dismissed as "ghoulish" any speculation that party officials kept Mink's deteriorating health and possibly the news of her death secret until after the September primary and after the deadline for withdrawing her name from the ballot ... Mink, 74, died Saturday

Hawaii has known for awhile now that Mink was ill ... she was suffering from Chicken Pox.

up here there was also a murdered man on top of one of the ballots...and you know what? he got besides one other guy the most votes...

that could only happen here in the netherlands...and now our government is the most shitty one anyone could imagine. i told this would happen to a lot of people, but still they voted for that dead guy and his party

I'm actually not arguing the fact that she's on the ballot. You're right, that's law. I misspoke.

It's the urging of elected officials to vote for her that's got me confused. If she wins, then my understanding is that the governor appoints someone to finish her term. That's where my comment was coming from.

Not so. The current rules state that the Governor can appoint someone to fill the vacancy for the term. It happend here in Georgia a year and a half ago. The senior Senator, a powerful and scrupulous Republican, died of a brain anyeurism. The Democratic governor appointed his own predecessor to the post. Retired Democratic Governor Zell Miller became the Jr Senator from Georgia. He is a Democrat... but hes also a fiesty ex Marine.

The elected officials are lame .. they see it as a "honor" for her .. but there are a few who have been speaking up against that, saying that it will cost more money in the end and it's the finest honor paid to her is that the elective process is done properly ... Inouye has got to be the lamest, asking us to vote for her as a final gesture .. he's got an agenda, I know it *lurking eyes*

I think you're right HomeLAN - if she wins I believe the governor can appoint someone in her place for the remainder of the term .. and which governor would it be, the new one or the old one? Cause if it's the new one, Cayetano shouldn't care less about her winning or not ... is there a choice thing? Does the governor get to pick either appointing or holding a special election?

BTW - I didn't think you misspoke, I just thought you didn't know she died after the deadline ... personally, I thought her family should have taken her off the ballot when she was in ICQ for 2 weeks without progress ... :(

something must have gone wrong with my post then....i think i must have meant rad beligion...yea ..thats it...

Updates on the special election ...

Gov. Ben Cayetano wants to hold the special election at the same time as the general election on Nov. 5 to determine who will fill out Mink's unfinished House term. Cayetano called that a "common sense solution" that would save taxpayers as much as $2 million in costs for the special election.

Goodbye Patsy Mink, the first minority woman to serve in Congress ...

They came to honor Mink, the tough political dynamo with an infectious laugh who was seen as a friend and advocate for those without power, prestige and proper connections. Many said they were there to express their appreciation for Mink's work to bring equality to the lot of the common person.

...Even in passing, Mink's situation has generated controversy. Since her death Saturday at age 74 of viral pneumonia, following a virtual news blackout of details of her condition, many residents have been critical of the fact that as many as two special elections will be held to replace her and asked if that could have been avoided.

But yesterday, that criticism was drowned out by a tidal wave of respect and appreciation.

Here in Missouri (USA) ... in November 2000 we had elections for senate seats, and two men were running for the position.

Mel Carnahan and John Ashcroft. During their compaigning Carnahan was killed in an airplane crash.

When ballot time came Carnahan was still on there and he won.

Eck, losing to a dead man.

Whoa, just noticed, Where are you, HiFlyr?

all of this is, currently, pointless. The NJ Supreme Court has said it's okay to replace your down in the polls, recently resigned (or probably dead) candidate with a more electable one.
