EL FASHER, Sudan (Reuters) - A U.N. team has arrived in Sudan to investigate whether genocide has occurred in the country's Darfur region where more than 1.5 million people have been made homeless by conflict, a U.N. spokesman said on Monday.

OK...the UN (the great toothless wonder) is going over to Sudan to make sure that it's really a 'genocide' or just one big misunderstanding.

Then...they get to have a few meetings about it and bring it up to the security council...who are the real teeth of the UN. The SC will decide what, if any, action needs to be taken.

The SC is made up of 15 member states (Five States have Permanent Member status - known as the P5: China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation.) who vote on action.

So far...of the P5. China, France and Russia say "Stay out of it" and The USA/UK block say "Is it worth it?"

Looks like it's going to be going on for a while, eh?

There are protests galore going on here asking the gov't to do something. I am hopeful that they will. SOON.

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Prime Minister Paul Martin has promised to offer much-needed help to Sudan’s troubled Darfur region, a move he hopes will spur other countries to step up to the plate and offer aid.

Canada will help to train peacekeepers to send to the area and has donated $20 million for the people devastated by the situation in the country. Arab militias, supported by the government are accused of killing up to 70,000 black Africans. Officials estimate 1.8 million people have been forced to leave their homes over the past 21 months.

Martin also lashed out at the United Nations, claiming they didn't move in quickly enough to stop the genocide.

About 1,000 African troops are prepared to enter the unstable region but Martin says that’s not enough, he believes the peacekeeping force needs to be 5,000 strong. He spoke to the president of Nigeria on Saturday, who heads up the African Union, which is responsible for providing the forces.

And on Sunday the Prime Minister headed to Haiti in a bid to boost international support for the western hemisphere’s poorest nation, to get it back on track after political unrest, a devastating hurricane and floods. Canada has pledged $20 million in humanitarian assistance and $180 million for reconstruction.

Even though he’s only in the country for a one-day visit, he’ll attempt to bring together political factions that aren’t on speaking terms and he plans to meet with the 100 Canadian police officers who are part of the UN peacekeeping force there.

Re: Sudan oh yeah that's a worthy cause NOT!

How about we all just sit back and wait for the UN inspections to finish, then we can discuss the the options at the UN and create a few resoultions, then we .....

Re: Sudan oh yeah that's a worthy cause NOT!

....so how does a "peacekeeping force" act when they are confronted with armed soldiers?

Flowers?

Re: Sudan oh yeah that's a worthy cause NOT!

We're helping to train ingoing peacekeepers, and slapping them some money.

Wouldn't that 200 mil be better spent in Canada?
Are you guys trying to get into the silly assed
World Charity business that we have been in since the end of WWII?

We've been there too dude...but oh, your press wouldn't have mentioned that, now would it? We've just managed to play nice...not make too many enemies along the way.

Chretien actually did a great deal of behind the scenes work during his time. An impressive amount imo. Especially impressive considering that he couldn't speak any languages. :confuse3:

Yeah, killing a terrorist is fun, but the true respect of soldier comes from killing Canuki-troops? ...is that what your saying here?

You're twisted Abby, where do you get off on this?

So hows this is going to save lives today; sounds like a plan you could even get thru the UN eventually.

Re: Sudan oh yeah that's a worthy cause NOT!

It's a start. I'm glad a start has been made.

The US could maybe just unilaterally go bomb the fuck out of the place if trying to do it rationally isn't to your liking.

Here's the simple readers digest low down skinny version...

Neither Iraq nor the Sudan can be helped.
If the people in either place don't stand up
and get their own house in order and fight for themselves we will tire of the loss of blood and treasure and they will be worse off than before.

Even today there are vast expanses of the planet that are inhabited by people who are not ready to act like it is the twenty first century.

I say let em' stew in their own juices as long as they don't fly airplanes into our buildings or release Sarin at the Superbowl or detonate a small nuke in New York harbor (is their a harbor in New York?) or car bomb Wal-Marts or homicide bomb school yards in America or anything else somewhat distasteful then yeah let em commit genocide in their own countries or stone their women because Gee Wilikers Batman after all
they are sovereign nations right?!
Restore Saddam to power and go home that’s what I say!!!
