Sure has been quiet..

That may be the intention but so far we've had more fatalities from accidents than combat and all involving aircraft!

...No kidding! It seems like we CAN be defeated, after all....just send us more helicopters!

...must be some kinda visibility issue over there at all times...

I was wrong, Hex....apparently we expended 1500 weapons yesterday all told. It doesn't look like anywhere near that will be going out today...

maybe "negotiations" are going well...

Bentwaters is closer still... I doubt that they are using only one base... Whatever it is, it's big...

bentwaters has been shut for ages, about the same time as honington and a bunch of others went. nearest one to you that i know of is wattisham but i think thats army-air now and just got 'copters.
lakenheath is usaf still but most of the others [barham, honiton etc] are raf now i think. weird that, my old man might know what it is coming your way, i've been gone too long.

Yes, we used to go and watch the Tornados taking off and landing at Wattisham, the runways right next to a narrow country road - now it's army choppers. They've had a couple airshows there too. :)

trying to find out for you - lakenheath has f-15s, mildenhall is refuelling and air support, so it could be big transports from there that you are hearing.

i do remember my dad telling me about the mid-80s libya bombings. he said that from where he was (near bury st edmunds) he heard the planes leaving and returing. bloody loud he said, and they all knew what they were going for.

as a kid i got so used to seeing [and hearing!] all sorts of stuff overhead - jags, gr1s, a-111, a-10, f-14, f-15, f-16. you occaisionally saw awacs and nimrod high up. mainly it was f-4 phantoms though.

Exactly how many American planes are in Britain? Is England flying anything to Iraq or are they mostly assisting the United States with ground forces?

Just curious Mad, did you get that from the Franks briefing? I caught the first five minutes of it at 4am but coundn't stay awake.

britain used to have a whole bunch of usaf or dual-run bases over here, most in the south or east anglia regions. the biggest of these were lakenheath-mildenhall and bentwaters-woodbridge. after the end of the cold war a good deal were decommissioned.

i'm fairly sure that all that is left now is 3-4 usaf stations mostly centred on fairford and lakenheath. bomber command is in fairford and most of the long-range b-52s and b-1bs are there. f-15s at lakenheath and i think some nukes as well, but that's always subject to rumour.

they are currently flying b-52 sorties to the middle east out of fairford.

Now it looks like someone lobbed a couple of grenades into two officer tents of the 101st Airborn division in Kuwait.
Some serious injuries amongst high ranking officers. I heard like ten serious injuries but no specifics.

uncertain specifics on teh 101st. They got the 2 guys, they were translaters.

I'm sure there are some Tornadoes and Harriers form UK there. Probably based on Saudi Arabia I think...
