And here comes the slavery part. Not even half of the white Southern population owned slaves. I believe the right figure is 1% actually. Yes, some were cruel. But I refer to a few quote for the rest. From 'The South Was Right!' by James and Walter Kennedy.
"Aunt" Adeline, Fayetteville, AR
After the war many soldiers [Yankees] came to my mistress, Mrs. Blakely, trying to make her free me. I told them I was free but I did not want to go anywhere, that I wanted to stay in the only home that I ever known....Sometimes I was threatened for not leaving but I stayed on.
This was common for many former slaves after the war. This is why black people fought for the South-to protect their way of living. The one's that didn't like it went up North, and got treated just the same, or sometimes worse than their former owners did. The state of Illinois even passed a law forbidding blacks to enter their state.
So yes, slavery was a horrible thing, but it was going to die off on its own when industrialism spread South. That's what Southerners argued. The North just didn't want to listen, because they freed their slaves long ago. That made their cause holy.
