The new African genocide

I know that this will be panned as bunk because it comes from a politically incorrect source quoting another politically incorrect source, and I will be accused of being obsessed with Black people's plight; but what the Hell why not post it anyway? Maybe, just maybe, someone will actually care.

Greens re-boot African genocide: WHO reverses on DDT
May 23, 2009

From today’s Wall Street Journal:

In 2006, after 25 years and 50 million preventable deaths, the World Health Organization reversed course and endorsed widespread use of the insecticide DDT to combat malaria. So much for that. Earlier this month, the U.N. agency quietly reverted to promoting less effective methods for attacking the disease. The result is a victory for politics over public health, and millions of the world’s poor will suffer as a result.

The U.N. now plans to advocate for drastic reductions in the use of DDT, which kills or repels the mosquitoes that spread malaria. The aim “is to achieve a 30% cut in the application of DDT worldwide by 2014 and its total phase-out by the early 2020s, if not sooner,” said WHO and the U.N. Environment Program in a statement on May 6…

“Sadly, WHO’s about-face has nothing to do with science or health and everything to do with bending to the will of well-placed environmentalists,” says Roger Bate of Africa Fighting Malaria. “Bed net manufacturers and sellers of less-effective insecticides also don’t benefit when DDT is employed and therefore oppose it, often behind the scenes.”

The 14th century witnessed the “Black Death.” We’ll witness “Green Death.”

DDT may have prevented as many as 100,000,000 deaths in the last half century. It was the greatest pesticide ever. Bring it back (just don't drink it)

DDT has its pros and cons. It is an effective insecticide (pro) but it is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and easily stored in the fatty tissues (con).

Many people already know its affects on the environment but there DDT also affects humans with mild to moderate exposure.

"Acute effects likely in humans due to low to moderate exposure may include nausea, diarrhea, increased liver enzyme activity, irritation (of the eyes, nose or throat), disturbed gait, malaise and excitability; at higher doses, tremors and convulsions are possible"

"One study did report a significant association between maternal DDT blood levels and miscarriage, but the presence of other organochlorine chemicals (e.g., PCBs) in maternal blood which may have accounted for the effect make it impossible to attribute the effect to DDT and its metabolites." Results of this study were inconclusive, but if I were a mother trying to have a baby I wouldn't risk it.

"In humans, blood cell cultures of men occupationally exposed to DDT showed an increase in chromosomal damage. In a separate study, significant increases in chromosomal damage were reported in workers who had direct and indirect occupational exposure to DDT (3). Thus it appears that DDT may have the potential to cause genotoxic effects in humans, but does not appear to be strongly mutagenic. It is unclear whether these effects may occur at exposure levels likely to be encountered by most people." Would you take a job spraying DDT knowing this?

"Acute human exposure data and animal studies reveal that DDT can affect the nervous system, liver, kidney (3). Increased tumor production in the liver and lung has been observed in test animals (3). An association with pancreatic cancer was suggested in humans in one study."

I would say that this information should be given to the people before forced spraying around and in their homes.

The reported problems of DDT, many of which were scare tactics with only minimal scientific investigations, have been overemphasized & it's benefits far outweigh the risk. Remember, it was the 70's-the green movement needed its first victim.

they've done the same with many good chemicals to control roaches.:(

It took a huge battle to get rid of um about 10 years ago.
If it hadn't been for that combat gel stuff....

Rachael Carlson "Silent Spring".

Now proven to be one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated on mankind. She is singularly responsible for the deaths of millions of people worldwide; and she is likely the most prolific mass killer in history -- albeit unwittingly.

Please note that Mrs Carlson herself did not ask for DDT to be banned, and to this day doesn't quite get why someone took off with her statement (about the overuse of DDT) in order to ban it entirely. THe main issue is that the chemical companies went on a rampage to discredit her and instead raised the public's awareness of the issue they were trying to suppress. The public's anger about the indiscriminate use of pesticides by the GVT shut the whole damn thing down.
