which monk is attributed with being the man who began the gothic style and which french monastery was his great achievement?

i know my field is a bit specialised so i'll understand if it comes to hints early on :)

Heh. Did he ever write any theological or philosophical tracts?

he wrote philosophical tracts on the nature of light and the gothic, but none as important as the things he physically built

ok, the monstary where attributed to being the home of the gothic is now largely destroyed, it was the burial place of the capetian kings. it shares its name with the new french national football stadium on the outskirts of paris.

as for the monk he wrote this as he rebuilt the great carolingan church:
'once the new rear part is joined to the part in front
the church shines with its middle part brightened
for bright is theat which is brightly coupled with the bright
and bright is the noble edifice which is pervaded by the new light'

his name is the sweetest thing :)

That was a guess - you'll have to make your clues more cryptic.

I've just got back in and my friend who is an Art Historian tells me that it was first used on the abbey church of St Denis just outside Paris.

that's the one, the few remaining bits [i think] are the ambulatory, the rest was demolished many years ago. the st denis region of paris is now the home of the stade de france, home of french rugby and football )

nope. :(

Gettysburg had 51,000 casualties and was the bloodiest battle in American history. I want the second most costly. I'll give you a clue - there were almost 35,000 casualties and the Confederates won. :)

Oh, the second! I misread :retard: I'd have another kick but then I would have to post another question and I'm out of ideas :confuse2:

Nope sorry. :(

Come on you guys surely you must know the second most bloody battle in your civil war. ?(

I'll give you a clue:

Chancellorsville, Antietam, Chickamauga or Bull Run?

Sorry. I'm familiar with the history, but I don't have them ranked by nubmers of casualties. I remembered that the Wilderness battle was particularly nasty because of the fire that broke out and burned the wounded. That's why I picked it.

Let me see... using your hint, I guess I would pick Antietam. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Bull Run, because the Yanks were running too fast for many of them to get killed in that one.:p

Sorry ris but you're wrong. :( good try though.

Wrong about the first, right about the second. :D

Only one left that it can be... ;)

Sorry it took me so long to answer but I've been researching mobos and their availability and prices for my upgrade after christmas. I f nothing changes it's a choice between the Abit KX7-333 or the MSI KT3 Ultra 2, I've found both for around £70 - £72, both support DDR333, up to 2600+ processors, etc. I was also looking for a case with a 400W PSU but I've decided I didn't like any of the ones I can afford for now so I've just gone for a change of PSU in my present case - maybe (I do like the I-TEE but it's £90 and I'm trying to stick to under £180 for the moment by using my present cpu and then upgrading that a little later). Not decided on the heatsink yet but I want a good one.

Umm... is it Chickamauga? :p

I started to edit my earlier reply because I remembered after I sent it that you said it was a Confederate victory. I didn't think it would be fair to keep guessing when you had made it multiple choice. :)

Okay, here's my question then:

His campaign in Africa forced Hannibal to abandon the Italian Peninsula and return home to defend Carthage. He defeated Hannibal in the battle of Zama, thus ending the Second Punic War. Who is he?

Hasn't someone responded to this already? I was watching the topic and I've received email notices about responses, but I don't see any here. Maybe they were lost in the hard drive crash...?
