Too true. My father never recovered from my brother's death.
 
Just got back from the 1201am showtime excursion. It is now 450am ... gag. Lets see... They didn't start it until about 11 after; followed by a 23 minute barrage of commercials and previews. I think there were 15 of them ... my god.. 15 previews... for a midnight screening. That is just insane.

I must say that I did rather enjoy it .. but I do have some general problems with some directions they have taken with the general storyline and character development. I'm way too tired to try and elaborate right now... a pillow calls me.
 
LOTR is the movie I've been waiting to see for one year and it's a must since it has got more action and it's a 3 hour movie...I can't wait for this coming Saturday...
 
I'm seeing it tonight at 7:15. I already have the tickets.
unc, by that do you mean J.R.R. Tolkein went the wrong direction with character development, or [I forgot his name again; the director] did something in the movie but not in the book.
My one big thing with EVERY movie is that they skipped The Old Forest, Tom Bombadil, and the Barrow-Downs. Some skip right from the 111th birthday to Bree!
They also missed Frodos house in BrandyWine.
But besides that they stuck pretty much to the story, except they NEVER put Glorfindel on the bridge to rivendell, it's always Legolas or Arwen. It's supposed to be Glorfindel, and they mess it up.
 
I don't mind truncating certain sectons for the sheer sake of time compression, or even small adjustments for the sake of making a personal touch for the writers/director. They went overboard with some of the character remoldings and inserting too much cute comedy. I don't want to say specifics because I don't want to spoil it for anyone or infuse my predispositions upon anyone. The only thing I do want to say is that Legolas has a few moments that make him seem like a waterwalking-Jesus/Chow Yun Fat ninja boy that left me in awe.

Altron, I mean that the writers made the mistake in messing with three key characters too much. One pure noble character, whom I will not mention, was turned into an asshole for no decent reason. That left me scratching my temple in puzzlement.

I disliked the Helms Deep "part"
They brought the people who weren't fighting to some other hideout.
And the Osgiliath part didn't happen in book.
 
I liked how Gimli was pretty funny.

But Faramir pissed me off.
He was much nicer in the book

And Osgiliath was all wrong, it's the old ruined city, no one lives there anymore!

Another annoyance was how they made Helm's Deep to look like the big climatic battle.

Unc, are you speaking of the attitude towards golem? Now i have no idea what happened in the book but if that's what you're speaking of i didn't like the way he treated him but i thought it was brilliant how he began to have some tolerance for Golem after he was straightened out by the ring-barer(showing him how to make rabbit. He did seem a little assholish but i tend to think he just didn't trust Golem to any length and had great concern for their situation.

Personally i think there ought to be two different review pages, one for those who have read the books, and one for those who haven't. The reason being that those who have read the books keep saying this character was changed into this or that, when in fact for some of us the characters were never changed at all since they never existed in our minds to begin with until we viewed the movie.
 
I think Gimli's attitude fits well with the one he had at the end of the first movie, and Legolas kicks some serious butt too. But I'd agree the mockery on Gimli sometimes goes a bit far.
As for the other characters behaviour, I can't really tell since I'm not there yet in the books...
