There's a Cross in the Middle of a Desert....

Where's the problem? Whoever covered the cross could have been shot for trespassing,

The land has since become federal property. There are 4 very large military bases in the immediate area including Edwards AFB and China Lake Navel weapons center, a bombing range, tank training range and some other assets. Most of the area is void of anything with a few crossroads with gas and hydration.

There was an offer to trade those useless 4 acres for several multiples of that four. The offers was blasted by the ACLU who took action to prevent the deal from even being considered.

looks to me like that bottom part is rusted, and if it's a blasting range,
maybe it needs be protected.
I wonder what the age difference is in the pics???

This could be seen from many different angles, no matter the perception,
original intent, or other.

Different peoples perception only matters, and that's between them and God.

Years ago (early 80’s) there used to be lil white crosses
by the side of the road from Phoenix to Kingman
Arizona, (Highway 93) some adorned with flowers,
presumably from family members,
denoting where a traffic fatality had occurred.

This used to be a truly dangerous stretch of highway.

I frequently traveled this route in the course of business

As the years passed the number and frequency
increased at a mindboggling pace, in some locations there would be
clusters of three or more denoting where there had been multiple
deaths in one accident!

I forget the purported reasoning for their removal but I’m a
telling you, them thar things always kept me focused when I made that drive.

Oh no today it is wholly unrecognizable. Big beautiful divided
safe and modern in everyway. But back in the olden days it was
a marvelously dangerous stretch of road.
Epic in it’s murderous intent!

To top it off it is the main route from Phoenix to Las Vegas
so you’d get totally wrecked people driving on it, on their way
back from Vegas!

One day towards sundown I had a guy coming at me head on
completely on my side of the road. I ended up using all of the
right-hand shoulder and then some getting around him.

Then I guess the memorials served a great purpose until...

They made um take down those here, without fixing the roads up. In many places.
They were spotted though. Not just one stretch of road.

There was a road here highway 666, no shit
of course it’s been renamed
it made highway 93 look like child’s play.

I only went down it once years ago,
that was one times too many for me.

From wiki:The Arizona portion of the highway is known as the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, as it approximated the path of the Spanish explorer, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. This portion is noted for mountainous terrain, with hairpin turns and steep grades, that reaches an altitude of over 9,000 feet. The curves force a speed limit of 10 miles per hour in spots.

yeah there's been several movies made about that route, and filmings on the location.
I've only been as far west of here as dallas tx.
That was far enough for me.
