Thought rant: American comedy VS British comedy.

We used to have a show in the early days of TV that consisted mostly of people hitting each other. It was called "The Three Stooges."
 
speaking of the Stooges, i saw a documentary/biography type show about them a few years ago. to help explain the humor of the Stooges, for those of us that never "got" them (*raises hand* ) they took a bar fight scene from an old John Wayne western and dubbed the Stooge sound effects into it. had to be one of the funniest things i ever saw.

desperately trying to think of recent American sit-coms I found funny.... all I come up with are the Bob Newhart Show (original one, where he's a psychologist in Chicago), Mary Tyler Moore, MASH, Soap, All in the Family (rip-off of an English show), Mary Hartman! Mary Hartman! and the Larry Sanders Show

but none of the above come even close to making me laugh as hard as the Canadian show The Newsroom, or the English shows Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By

as for the lack of French comedians, I'd say quantity is more than made up for by the quality and sheer genius of Jacques Tati :cool:

I don't think there's a country in the world that wouldn't see the humour in a bunch of americans beating themselves up. :lol2:

Well at least the french inspired Inspector Cleuseu (sp?) (Pink Panther) :D

Wanders over to sit in the corner and giggle childishly about the "Elevator Scene" for a while...

I always assumed that was a strictly British creation solely to make fun of the French.

Actually...the very first Inspector was played by none-other-than Jack Lemmon, and was strictly an American creation. Then, Blake Edwards got ahold of him, and modified him further for the Pink Panther movies...
