Among the headlines promoted by publisher Thomas Dunne Books: Ridge was never invited to sit in on National Security Council meetings; was "blindsided" by the FBI in morning Oval Office meetings because the agency withheld critical information from him; found his urgings to block Michael Brown from being named head of the emergency agency blamed for the Hurricane Katrina disaster ignored; and was pushed to raise the security alert on the eve of President Bush's re-election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over.

Ridge says no plan to raise terror threat level

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 2004-10-31 05:29:55 (Xinhuanet) --

US Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Saturday there was no plan to raise the national terror threat level in response to the broadcast of a videotape of Osama bin Laden.

Ridge said there had been no specific information indicating possible terrorist attacks, and state and local officials have already stepped up security measures as planned to safeguard the election.

"We don't have to go to orange to take action in response either to these tapes or just general action to improve security around the country," he said.

Ridge said the Homeland Security Department and the FBI issued a bulletin to local and state officials late Friday, but had no plan at the moment to raise the threat level at the federal level.

But Ridge stressed that his department reserve the right to raise the alert level. American intelligence agencies were still analyzing the videotape, which was broadcast on Al Jazeera on Friday, to determine whether bin Laden's speech contained hidden messages or clues about a possible future attack against the United States. Ridge, what a disappointment.
I had such high hopes for him, but he never really came through.

I'm not even sure why this is a story, it was clear before he made any admission, and if they aren't going to hold anybody responsible for the Iraq debacle and the election tampering, why even talk about it?

Interesting. They didn't want to raise the terror level in response to an Osam bin Laden tape, but if there's an election going on send it up there.

Air America? Blog?

The more shocking revelation, however, is that Ridge resigned shortly after the 2004 Presidential election because the White House pressured him to raise the terror alert shortly before the election to help George W. Bush assure victory over Senator John Kerry. After his resignation, the terror alert system was all but scrapped, since it had apparently served its purpose to the Administration.

That sounds like the original press release.

He didn't quit because of the reason you would like to believe.

Like I said, if he thought it worth resigning over, why didn't he?

Security czar Ridge weighs resigning after election. Stress, financial concerns cited as reasons

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge is considering stepping down after the November election, telling colleagues he is worn out from the massive reorganization of government and needs to earn money in the private sector to put his teenage children through college, officials said.

Didn't the left wingers speculate in print at the time he resigned, or is it more convenient to do it when Ridge's book is released?
