Americans will need passports to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Panama and Bermuda by 2008, part of a tightening of U.S. border controls in an era of terrorist threat, three administration officials said Tuesday.
Similarly, Canadians will also have to present a passport to enter the United States, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Canadians have been the only foreigners allowed to enter the United States with just a driver's license.

Seriously, I have no problem whatsoever with having to show my passport when returning to the country. There are dangerous people out there and if a little inconvenience on my part protects someone, good. Our security has been a joke in the past, I can't believe this stuff hasn't changed already.
 
for canadians, do they at least search for the driver's licence number in a computer to verify the identity, or is it just enough to show it?

for the americans, what do you show when entering your country?, is that document somehow verified?
 
holy crappy security batman, and they worry the terrorists might enter through Mexico.
 
Anecdotally, it's harder to get back here than it is to go there.

I know a few people personally who have gone down there with no ID and not been allowed back in. Family has had to find their stuff and take it to them at the border.

I have only ever crossed at the St. Stephens border into Maine. It always seems much harder to get back into Canada, than into the U.S.

In fact, I don't ever remember being searched going into the U.S. It is always coming back home. I have not crossed in a few years though, so maybe things have changed.
 
When I used to cross into Tijuana, I was required to show 2 forms of stateside ID. A drivers license & a credit card would suffice, usually.

Going to Nogales I all I ever needed was my driver's license. :shrug:
 
I was a country musician. We smoked just as much dope as you guys, but got hassled a lot less. ;)
 
I didn't smoke but yea, the look got me "pulled over to the right" more than once.
