Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!NEW YORK (Reuters) - An internal audit warned top executives at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. three years ago that employee records at 128 stores showed extensive violations of child-labor laws and state regulations, the New York Times said on Tuesday
An official at Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, did not immediately return calls for comment, but a spokesperson told the paper the audit was meaningless, since what looked like violations could simply reflect employees' failure to punch in and out for breaks and meals they took. The audit -- now under court seal -- of one week's time-clock records for about 25,000 employees found 1,371 instances in which minors worked too late at night, worked during school hours or worked too many hours in a day, the paper said. It also found 60,767 apparent instances of workers not taking breaks, and 15,705 apparent instances of employees working through meal times. The paper said there are more than 40 current lawsuits charging Wal-Mart with making employees work without pay through lunch and rest breaks. source

What...no comments??!?

The most shopped-at yet hated store ont he face of the earth proven to be Sadistic zealots out for the buck over the health of their employees...and no-one comments??!?

Sheesh!!!

I can reply to this after a 6 month plus break from the boards :crying4:.... Walmart is and always will be a corporation backed by the scam artists of the world. I have heard several similar reports going from child labor laws being broken to having a crap load of illegal immigrants working for them.. So I'm not suprised by this what does suprise me is that it took this long to come to a head and be reported!

speaking as someone who has worked since 14 and broken many a labor law, it's easy to lay blame but when you have a gazillion employees it's very easy to forget who is underage etc...and the kids don't say anything because they want the hours and the money....i know i never pointed out that it was too late for me to workor that i didn't take my break...i was thinking of my paycheck.

Yep, I've been one of those sadistic zealots you mention above too, Bish.

Child labor laws most places regard past 9:00pm as being too late. I couldn't tell you the number of times I had waitresses working past nine, but not becuase I forced them to, becuase they wanted to, and because we had the business to support them being there. I wonder how many of those 77,000 are instances such as that, where a kid worked til 9:15

Same here, tonks.... I've been working since I was 14.... it was illegal then, and I'm guessing it still would be

After that job the others were all restaurant or retail. Breaks? you've gotta be joking.... when there's 50 people waiting for your attention, or the phone is ringing off the hook? Those jobs put me through school. I was glad to have them and wasn't about to start asking for breaks, vacations, etc. I knew I'd be out of there eventually, anyway.

Y'know. There are three groups that I never believe, no matter how much they prove facts. Politicians, Tree huggers, and the Press. There's always something slimy wiggling around just under the surface, that you don't get to see.

Boy, you just basically don't trust much of anyone, eh? Don't forget doctors - surely they don't fall in one of the three groups.

I worked at wal-mart for a short time - they were always adamant about making us take breaks on time and lunches, etc. Bastards. I'd have rather worked through and recieved the pay.

Um...did everyone miss that this was an internal audit? They weren't caught exploiting children. They just identified problem areas to be dealt with...by themselves, for themselves...

My mom & her husband live just outside Searcy AR & well, let's just say it's safer, for them, if I keep my mouth shut ;)

the one I worked in and the ones in my area all have a yellow sticker for anyone who is underage. it does help with some of the labour laws and such although it is a huge company and it is easy to lose track of who is and isnt underage. but laws are laws and must be followed

Welcome back drkavenger :)

Thanx much appreciated.... I missed this place soo much!

Back on topic now, I do understand that most of the violations listed are probably (oh my god they made them work till 9:05, they (walmart) should burn in #ell) just a small problem but I do believe that most kids (the underaged ones) shouldn't be working because it takes away from the illegals getting the jobs! :D

BTW I know that sentence is really *ucked up in syntax but hey I'm lucky I passed 1st grade english!
