Dean: 'We Don't Know' If Iraqi People Are Better Off Without Saddam
Thu Apr 24 2003 10:09:22 ET

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean was asked on CNN Wednesday if he feels differently about the war now that it has ended.

Dean said, "Not really. I don't think anybody could reasonably suspect we weren't going to win. The problem now is how to govern, and that's where the real rubber is underneath the road.

"The hardest part is still ahead of us, and I think the events that we were watching on CNN showed that. The Shi'a in the south would like in some cases fundamentalist religious state or province, that would be much worse than Saddam Hussein in terms of a threat to the United States it would allow al Qaeda to move in.

"We seen chaos in Baghdad with the proclamation of somebody claims he's the mayor. And this is going to go on and on. So we've really got to now build a Democratic society."

Asked if the Iraqi people are better off now than they were under Saddam, Dean said, "We don't know that yet. We don't know that yet, Wolf. We still have a country whose city is mostly without electricity. We have tumultuous occasions in the south where there is no clear governance. We have a major city without clear governance."

END

right this minute i think the iraqi people might take running water and electricity as a starting point, from their point of view they still don't run their own country plus they've been bombed and important services severed.
they've been told they have freedom but in fact they are currently under a different military dictatorship.

Many thousands killed as well and the hospitals don't have near enough resources for the wounded. It's not exactly Utopia.

How do you know how many were killed? Are you there?

I view the situation like setting a broken bone. It's painful as hell, and at the moment you'd probably wish it wasn't being set, but there is no doubt at all that setting it is the proper thing to do, and everyone involved will be relieved at a later time that the right decision was made.

Stop overlooking the obvious...the regime that murdered for fun, used turture as a plaything & thought raping little girls was cute has been removed. Everything else is just pudding.

Restoring order could take a while. And then, don't forget, Iraqis elect the leader. Who do you think they will elect? It's not over yet. The war went well, but the final outcome is still in question. Better keep those psyops guys in place until after elections ;)

Come on, flavio you can do better than that. Which news, When did they say it, and where did they get their information? If you can't show some concrete evidence, then your 'news' is nothing more than sensationalized conjecture.

I've yet to see a story, in print, proclaiming any kind of number, general or specific, on civilians deaths. And we all know I'm a news junkie :D

:confuse3: I had heard "over 12000 dead and wounded civilians in Bagdahd" several times on broadcast news. I also saw a report on the frustration of dealing with the wounded because of no power and lack of supplies.....Is there really a question in your minds? (That was directed toward Gato and Gonz)

I haven't seen, or heard, anything like that. My question is...

Where did you get that information? I'm asking for a source. Any source, other than "I heard this on the radio/broadcast news..." If there's no source, then it's just a rumor bordering on libel.

BTW...as long as you're trying to find your source on the 12,000 supposed dead because of the US attacks, read this over and discuss...

Easy Gato...:D It was a non issue to me. I figured everyone was hearing the same info I was hearing....I had/have no reason to refute it. The numbers were far more acceptable than what I had feared. I get most of my news from 'broadcast'. I don't chase all over the net for it...If something is of special interest I may follow it up online. I was just surprised that no one else seemed to have heard those numbers. Like I said, I heard them several times...

Also take a look at this . Remember...read the entire article before you comment, as I will chastise you if you didn't.;)

edited for oopsies. :D
