Whatr are the best concerts you've ever seen?
I'll give my top-ten -- because I've seen alot of cool concerts...and I'm old (34).
10) Lollapalooza 1 --1991 I think -- The Rollins Band, Butthole Surfters, Ice-T, Living Colour, Nine Inch Nails, Siouxie and the Banshees, Janes Addiction.
I'd seen about 3 of these bands before but it was great to see all these groups together in front of so many people. A great time.
9) Parliament-Funkadelic -- 2000 -- 10 funky-ass old folks funkin' up a storm
8) The Who (with Heart and J. Geils) 1978 -- The Who were a little past their prime but they still rocked. I was very into them at the time. This one would be higher on my list if I hadn't gone to the concert with my mother (I begged her to take me). I was 11 years old.
7) The (English) Beat -- 1982 -- They were one of the great British Ska groups. It was a small room -- maybe 400 people -- and everyone danced their asses off.
6) Peter Tosh. 1977 -- He was one of the Wailers in Bob Marley and the Wailers and wrote some of their best songs. After Bob Marley, Tosh is considered the (2nd) greatest Reggae artist. It was a free concert at an amusement park (Ontario Place). I feel very fortunate to have seen him. He was shot dead a few years later.
5) Motorhead with Slayer -- 1988 -- I saw Metallica a year earlier but this was an incredible metal show in front of about 500 people. Easily the loudest concert I've ever seen.
4) Run-DMC with Public Enemy -- 1988 -- Run-DMC were THE top rap group of their day. Public Enemy were unknown at the time...but they brought the noise.
3) The Ramones -- 1982 -- 50 2 minutes songs. Fun Fun Fun.
2) James Brown -- 1987 -- The Godfather of Soul and Funk and another free concert (at Ontario Place). He was incredible.
1) The Rolling Stones at the Horseshoe -- 1998 -- The Horseshoe is a small club in Toronto -- it holds only about 300 people. It was a secret concert that I found out about because the sound-guy was a friend and I happened to run into him that day. They played for about 1.5 hours -- strictly hits. They were in town warming up for their big tour. It was just unreal to be so close to such big stars and hear 'Start Me Up', etc right in your face. John Goodman and Dan Ackroyd were there working the bar dressed like the Blues Brothers. I tipped Goodman a loonie (a Canadian dollar) for the beer he served me.
Honourable mention -- Nirvana at Lees Palace -- 1991 --. There were only about 50 people there. I didn't even plan to go. My girlfriend and I were walking past the club and I suggested we check it out because I'd heard of them. They were basically unknown at the time outside of the 'scene'. I would put them on the list but frankly they weren't very good. They became much much better.
That's my list. I've been to other good concerts but these are probabaly the best.
