Heard someone say this awhile back and it struck me as having some truth in it:

Capitalism destroyed communism in the Soviet Union. In the United States it destroyed democracy.

no, I never thought that... but I did believe that we aspired to democratic ideals.... I was young and foolish then

well youll lose quite a bit of respect for me but I thought it was. at least in history I had thought it was.

Always a republic, never a democracy, although I was taught the same thing and got in trouble for arguing the point.
