It's not purely defensive tho'. It would be purely defensive if the nuclear missiles on US soil were dismantled and no more were built up
OR
if the defense shield was also aimed at shooting down incoming American missiles. Unlikely.

American missiles aimed at North Korea, China, Russia, Middle East.
For it to be purely defensive..it'd have to aim to stop all missiles equally, eh

i don't think there are any US missiles of the big silo'd nuke variety aimed at the middle east, though the idea of it is somehow pleasing. perhaps we could aim some at france, too?
and the russians and chinezers do have a point that a missile shield would change the balance of power in that the whole mutually assured destruction thing isn't there anymore, though i suppose that ain't quite at the level it was during the cold war anyhoo. but hey, tough shit, jerks. anything that makes an offensive option of either of those two less viable is super duper. let 'em whine. chinese have been doing a great job at that lately anyway.

If the point of such a shield is to bring about mutually assured peace, sure. If the point is to create a defensive position, sure.
What's the point of holding a gun to someone's head while you scream "We come in peace"?
This shield is no more a defensive position than armor on a tank, or a bullet-proof vest. It's meant to prevent you from harm while allowing you to pound your enemies into the ground.
