After living through several mid & upper sixes, I can't even fathom an 8.9

It's been upgraded to 9.1.

The sea floor collapsed for 150 miles x 50 miles. That's one hell of a hole.

shit, i wonder if the big one is gonna hit here. apparently ever 350 years or so there's a 9ish quake in this area, and the last one was about that many years ago. do i have enough water, wine, cat food, toilet paper, and ammo to get through that? yeah, i better get some water...

OOPS!!

What the fucked happened to their backup? The main power grid dropping off the map, I understand. It was a huge quake. Why did the diesel backup generators quit? That makes no sense.

8.9 is quite a wallop

very true
a big boo boo there
it would require a cascade failure to cause this
but getting whacked with an 8.9 might just do that eh?

an over simplification would be: system detects an oh shit condition
emergency scram initiates
then many systems are available to deal with the decay heat

just losing power from the grid isn't sufficient to cause a core melt down
but having the whole placed kicked in the nuts by a quake
and hit with a tsunami might would be

It will be years (if ever) before we get the full story on what really happened
I'm sure everybody in the nuke industry is dying to find out what happened

sumthin' sure blew up

hydrogen buildup in the housing structure is what they're saying. No breach of the inner containment. I blame Sarah Palin.

people in low-level white suits and mask are passing out KI.

Yup^, confirmed for chaos.

6 reactor failures, one dripping? Good thing Hillery delivered that coolant to save the day.

We're all gonna' die.

Obama is golfing today.

A nice little stand alone viewer (no extra adware or anything either)

How can an Air Force deliver reactor coolant?

c'mon folks in everyday life when you encounter
people speaking gibberish, assuming they aren't high
you can safely make the determination that they are idiots.

Are all these people brain damaged?

I'm beginning to think mebbe ol Minx is right

As much as I support nuke-u-lar power, I do have to question why Japan is so heavily powered by it. The are on the plate line & huge quakes are not uncommon.

USGS

I'm not sure it'd be a great idea to build 'em in Bakersfield either.

We had a little 3.4 quake moments before the japs got hit. But... Nevada and Az were made for putting large scale plants up, like cacti.
