Is there a way to get on the net through a wireless/cell/sat phone?
What's the best service... cheapest...?

A lot of phones are internet-capable but it's not exactly the same as the internet you see on your computer.

Ah... that's where they send you a PCMCIA card that you install and use it to use Verizon's network for your data. It's kind of like a WiFi card but it accesses Verizon's CDMA EvDO network. Your internet would work everywhere a Verizon phone would work in digital mode.

Using a cell phone as a dial-up modem will work... but if you think regular dial-up is slow, wait until you try it with a cell phone.

I never had any problems when I used a friend of mine's. It certainly isn't as fast as DSL or cable, but it was certainly as fast or faster than a home dial-up connection.

Yep, and the card is like $175, and you have to signup for at least a year plan.
$300 startup didn't appeal to me.

A company over here has wireless phone lines, it is in fact a wireless modem which connects you to the internet and all your calls are through voice ip. For around 80 a month you get broadband internet and unlimited calls (both local and long distance).

An alternative which I'm investing in is bluetooth... get a bluetooth enabled phone and a dongle for ur laptop... mine's a Belkin. I'm using a Jabra BT200 headset with it atm so i can chat to people on msn. But I'll be getting a phone when I find the one I want.

Then all you need to do is get a dialup account. I don't know what the call charges would be like tho. But it's a thought. I'm doing it as an alternative way of keeping in touch when I'm on the move. Primarily because while I have wireless, the hot spots here are few and far between and I don't want to be tied into a contract.

You can only connect(pair) 1 device at a time. So at home it's headset > laptop (bluetooth) then laptop > accesspoint (wireless). For security, it's only 10 metre range and u can give access to only the devices u pair with.

I use a USB cable with my phone for internet if in a pinch. Its not exactly dialup, its the Sprint Vision thing (more like using a phone as a gateway). $15/mo gives me 384k.
