Linux and DVDs

Posted this over at HWC, but it hasn't gotten a response yet.
I thought they were about Hardware WTF. Must be going down hill.

know some time back linux was particular about which modems
were best to use with it. (e.g. hardware modems)
I'm wondering is this is the case with DVD burners.

What is the best brand, and software to use in linux.
I'm using Debian right now, and want to do primarily backing ups of my harddrive,
but may want to copy some movies I have for back purposes.

Anyone here got any suggestions?
Chic....tommyj...??? anybody

If you don't use linux....
What dvd burner do you use.
I've got an Optorite, but it's been burning some coasters in xp lately,
and Newegg totally quite carrying that brand so I'm switching.

Which brands/models have you have good luck with?

I think I have the same optorite burner that you do (or did) cat. I burn cds all the time with xcdroast. There's a plug-in for dvd burning but I've never tried it. Xcdroast does recognize the drive as a dvd burner though, so I'd be surprised if it didn't work.

Thanks :nerd:

I've have bad luck with liteon in the past....way back.
I've heard over the last couple of years they've gotten good.

I am atually looking at this one (SOHW-1693S) but I've going to get some more input first.

I want a really good one this time, and am thinking plextor, but I dunno yet.
I've got that one, got it at Walmart for 60 bucks about 6 months ago. Haven't burned a coaster on it yet.

Thank everybody ! :)

I'm going to try k3b later today, and if I can't get any satisfaction with
my Optorite, I'm going to go with that liteon burner. :nerd:

Load windows.
That exactly the reason I want to try linux though.
Win 2000, I didn't have any problems with, but xp-pro is burning coasters now.
I need to figure out if it's the drivers, or the drive.
Besides, the more I work with linux, the more I see Windows is a piece of crap. :devious:

For the price I paid for Windows (every version since 3.1) I can't complain at all.....

That's the way I feel about Linux.
I hope you're not updating it. :devious:

Windows 2000 Was a damn good system, up until sp3, then sp4 made it like xp.
Just today I was setting up a scanner on sp4. The only thing I changed was
I went in the bios, and set the lpt port from ecp to ssp(spp?) to try to make it
more compatible with the old scanner I wanted to use.
I couldn't change it to anything other than what it was without getting a blue screen.
Geez, it's just one setting on an lpt port...sheesh.
I finally got it working, leaving it to ecp, but it took 2 hrs.

That's on the boot option. ;)

I'm still in transition 'from' it.

I think there's a conflict with nero, and mp10 somewhere.

The Nero problem is well documented. There's a patch at the Nero website...
