A friend of mine just started doing meat packing at Costco. He enjoys it, gets 35-40hrs a week so he's happy. Oh, and the friend is my ex Vince whom many of you have heard about.

 The "meatheads " are an interesting lot.

What do you do for a living? I work for a local council as a GIS analyst mapping and querying their park assets (asset managment). I'm currently mapping the Waikumete Cemetary - one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.

What sort of thing do you wear to work? Smart-casual stuff. Dress pants, tops, button-down shirts, nice skirts, boots, that sort of thing.

What are your typical hours? Flexi-time. Anytime as long as I do the 8.5 hours. usually work from 0800 - 1630.

Do you enjoy your work? Yup, doin' it at varsity, so it's obviously my "career". :headbang:

Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end? (the end being $$$$) Both. I'm on a very high wage, and I also love what I'm doing. :beardbng:

What do you do for a living? I am a probation/parole officer dealing with adults convicted of felony offenses.

What sort of thing do you wear to work? Business casual most days. Shirt with tie and jacket if I'm in court or conducting a parole hearing. Jeans on Fridays.

What are your typical hours? 8-4:30. Work late on some days, flex the time off later that week. NO weekends.

Do you enjoy your work? Sometimes.

Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end? (the end being $$$$) I enjoy working with people. Usually. I like to problem solve. Usually. Human behavior fascinates me. Usually. It damn sure ain't the money I promise you. 49th of 50 states in pay for the job. I gave up over $8500/yr to take this job. Got me out of Nashville. Worth every red cent.

What do you do for a living? Non-commissioned sales. I lie to people about video games, CDs, DVDs, cordless phones, PC peripherals, shelf stereos, alarm clocks, office supplies, and MP3 players on a pretty regular basis. Sorry Prof, but $8.75/hr ain't enough to make me want to read up on this shit in my spare time, and what paid training I do get is completely pathetic. There are people who know much less than I do, though. We're supposed to know the whole right side of the store, but about half the people in the department stay in the front section only, CDs and DVDs, because they know nothing about anything else. One aisle has a bunch of video cards in it. I've had someone who worked there for six months ask me "What do you need a video card for? Don't you just put in the CD and it works?". I have become an expert bullshitter. With extremely vague knowledge, guesses, and reading the backs of the boxes, I can sound like I know what I'm talking about. Sorry Prof, but we stock about 25 alarm clocks, and I don't have the time to learn every intimate detail. I regularly get reprimanded by dumb customers and even dumber management. Most of the people who work there are looking for another job. The rest are alcoholics.
What sort of thing do you wear to work?
The samn damn red 'Circuit City' polo shirt, one of two belts, one of two pairs of black slacks, and a pair of brown Rockport boots with absolutely no tread left on them from walking around for 20 hours a week for eight months. I didn't know carpet could wear down shoes that much. The soles are completely flat.
What are your typical hours?
I've gone home as late as midnight, and come in as early as 3:00 AM. Ranging from 5 to 35 hours a week, usually 4 days a week, 5-8 hours a day. Never a weekend day off.
Do you enjoy your work?
My coworkers are friendly and I enjoy spending time with them, but I hate the store.
Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end? (the end being $$$$)
At first, I thought it would be fun, selling electronics. It turns out that it completely sucks.

What do you do for a living?
I'm the entire IT dept. and inventory controller for a Goodyear dealer with 16 locations around the area.
What sort of thing do you wear to work?
Business casual except for Fridays when, like SnP, they let us wear jeans.
What are your typical hours?
7AM to 4PM monday through Friday. If there's and IT emergency I will very occasionally work til 5 or Saturday 7 til noon.
Do you enjoy your work? Mostly. I only get paid about 70% of what I could make just as a networking engineer in Nashville, but I hate the commute.
Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end?
All jobs are a means to an end. I'm interested enough to keep doing it though. If I were independently wealthy I wouldn't do it. If I were independently wealthy and unmarried I'd still have a band. ;)

What do you do for a living?
"Research Manager" is my current title that I'm less than fond of. I do market research.

What sort of thing do you wear to work?
Whatever I want. It's Seattle. We drink beer on fridays in the office.

What are your typical hours?
Typically 7-3 to beat the traffic. About 40 hours/week, but sometimes less, and sometimes FAR more... but I balance that out with approriately-timed slacking during slow times!

Do you enjoy your work?
Mostly. I get to work with lots of smart fuckers with Ph.D.s and we have fun making jokes about how stupid our clients are.

Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end?

Near ditto to chcr.
"All jobs are a means to an end. I'm interested enough to keep doing it though. If I were independently wealthy I wouldn't do it. If I were independently wealthy" and unattached I'd be playing bass in a shitty slayer cover band and enjoying every minute of it.

What do you do for a living? Network Specialist for a small electric cooperative in southern Indiana. I work mostly with Cisco gear (routing/switching) and "best of breed" (code for "not cisco") security equipment, and I'm involuntarily involved with some Tadiran VoIP.

What sort of thing do you wear to work? I usually wear khaki pants and a button up shirt. No tie.

What are your typical hours? 8a-4:30p, some saturdays as required, carry a cell phone at all times in case of emergency, Wednesday evening, 5p-9p is my maintenance window, which I usually use once a month or so.

Do you enjoy your work? Mostly. I feel under used, I have a feeling I'm about 18 months from getting really bored. I'd like to be a network engineer for a company with a larger network, more of a challenge.

Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end? (the end being $$$$) I make a good living, which will make it hard to leave even when I get bored. I do like the field. When/if I change employers, I hope to have a similar possition, but with more responsibility.

Do you enjoy your work? Mostly. I only get paid about 60% of what I could make just as a network administrator in Fort Wayne, My job is currently morphing again, so im not sure at the moment.
Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end?
All jobs are a means to an end. I'm interested enough to keep doing it though. When it was just IT i was more than interested, my wife says obsessed is more like it. I loved the challenge. now with the inventory part, well im interested but very bored with that part.

you think thems are benign questions?

yeah all the cold calling really get old, too.

no, really, we don't do any of that kind of shit.

but sometimes it might be more fun to interrogate random mall twits.

"yeah, sure it's your kid's corndog, lady."

What do you do for a living? I work at the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and I'm a consultant , whatever the hell that is... But generally I do th consulting thing, as well as a touch of programming if I get my hands on it :p :)

What sort of thing do you wear to work? Smart casual - more smart through depending on the day. Long skirt, and random long-sleeved shirt, or button blouse

What are your typical hours? Seeing as I'm a contractor, I can pretty much work whatever hours, my contract though says I have to work a minimum of like 7.5 hours a day. But seeing as I'm paying off a car, I get to work at 6, and then leave at 3:30 :) Get some extra hours in.

Do you enjoy your work? It's not called work because we're supposed to enjoy it :p But for the most part, yeah, I enjoy it :)

Is it something you're interested in? Or is it a means to an end? (the end being $$$$) Pretty much only involved in it for the $$ I'd like to see it as something more than just that, but that's pretty much all I get out of it... o_O

I work the Service Dept. counter, selling parts for an International trucks dealership.

I wear a uniform (gray pants, white button-up) from Cintas.

I work (theoretically) from 7-4, M-F, and every third Saturday...often here till 5-5:30, though.

I enjoy it sometimes, but it can get pretty stressful...I am responsible for the entire service dept (12 mechanics), and the new/used/lease departments don't like dealing with the front counter idiots, so they come to me. Also, the aforementioned idiots have pissed off so many customers that I have several of our outside customer accounts that will only deal with me.

I am interested in the customer service/problem solving side of my job, but so many of the people here at the dealership are difficult to deal with. I go to school at night, working on my Business Mgmt degree...definitely a means to an end. I have other job offers in the works, but the money here is too good to just walk away. I am building a great network in the industry, though...I could go just about anywhere after I get my degree.
