Senate Democrats Propose $1.9T Increase to U.S. Debt Limit
WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats on Wednesday proposed allowing the federal government to borrow an additional $1.9 trillion to pay its bills, a record increase that would permit the national debt to reach $14.3 trillion.

The unpopular legislation is needed to allow the federal government to issue bonds to fund programs and prevent a first-time default on obligations. It promises to be a challenging debate for Democrats who, as the party in power, hold the responsibility for passing the legislation.

The record increase in the so-called debt limit is required because the budget deficit has spiraled out of control in the wake of a recession that cut tax revenues, the Wall Street bailout, and increased spending by the Democratic-controlled Congress. Last year's deficit hit a phenomenal $1.4 trillion, and the current year's deficit promises to be as high or higher.

Congress has never failed to increase the borrowing limit, but it will take 60 votes to pass the legislation under an agreement by top Senate leaders.

Getting 60 votes became more complicated after Sen.-elect Scott Brown's victory Tuesday in Massachusetts. Democrats will shortly have 59 Senate seats and will need at least one Republican to pass the legislation.

You guys prepared to default on your existing debt? Good luck staying afloat if you do..but the alternative wouldn't be all that popular either. Paying down the debt would require two things that y'all all that fond of...

higher taxes and cutting costs...and the biggest costs right now?

Iraq alone is $759B/year. Another $100B for Afghanistan. That's over and above th $650B+/year for military spending.

They don't have to default.
It's all a numbers game.
That's just a scare tactic to get more money.
BS
Do the cut's. Get it right. Give up the pork.

Hell Yeah dis-band the military and Let Canada be the worlds policeman
cut off all education spending and stop all the social security
and welfare checks at once.

We'd be debt free in no time!

When the Republicans win all the elections they will inherit this mess
and take it in the shorts because of it!

yer goin’ down into chapter 11 America Long live the revolution!

The biggest porker is the two wars....stop those and you can clear over $1T off your bottom line. Close tax loopholes and you can get more cash..especially tax havens like having a headquarters off-shore.

1.) you got some breakdown figures on that?

2.) I could get on board with some of that, probably.
As long as it's not so lobby selective. I'd hate to see more ..
"taking out the competition through taxation" type stuff...damned crooks.

*flush*

but these other fuckers wanting to make a bigger deficit cap... yeah "buttholes" is right.

Let's see....

The most recent report by the agency, issued May 30, says more than 90 percent of Pentagon funds to support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were provided as “emergency funds in supplemental or additional appropriations,” which is exempt from ceilings “applying to discretionary spending in Congress’s annual budget resolutions.”
At least a half-dozen reports have been issued on Iraq and Afghanistan war funding since Democrats regained control of Congress in November 2006, all of which called into question whether the Pentagon had provided Congress with an accurate picture of its costs for the so-called Global War on Terror. The cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have reached more than $12.3 billion a month--$9 billion of which has been is being spent in Iraq—more than double what it costs to fund both wars in 2004. It costs taxpayers $390,000 annually in Iraq alone to fund a single soldier sent to the region. In total, Congress has appropriated about $700 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan, $524 billion of which was earmarked for Iraq. The figures include equipment, pay, and medical costs paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL33110.pdf This one's 67 pages long and only covers the above-the-board costs..not emergency fund requests..which, as quoted above, amounts to only 10% of actual costs...so if you see a figure of $100Million..multiply it by 10. :p

Tax havens and loopholes, as explained by the IRS

  • War is a temporary expense allowed for.
  • Welfare is a permanent expense and not allowed for.
So, if you really want to make a difference in the long vision, which makes sense?

from the pdf...
This $944 billion total covers all appropriations approved by Congress for
FY2001 to meet war needs through FY2009, the current fiscal year ending September 30, 2009.
Of that total, CRS estimates that Iraq will receive about $683 billion (72%), OEF about $227
billion (24%) and enhanced base security about $29 billion (3%), with about $5 billion that CRS
cannot allocate (1%). About 94% of the funds are for DOD, 5% for foreign aid programs and
embassy operations, and less than 1% for medical care for veterans.

I'm not a bigtime mathematician, but these numbers look real fuzzy to me.

Looks like the biggest part by far is going to the gov. admin, not necessarily to actually fight.

Looks like agenda driven playing with numbers so more politicians can scam.

"constitutional" does not matter when it's fucking stupid. get a new line, dude.

  • War is a temporary expense allowed for.
  • Welfare is a permanent expense and not allowed for.
So, if you really want to make a difference in the long vision, which makes sense?

Welfare is meant to be a temporary expense and a way to help people get back on their feet.. not always the way it's looked at, but how it was meant to be... right now, war is more welfare than welfare is..and far more expensive. The difference is that you're sinking money into reconstructing someone else's country instead of your own.

So when is it going away?

Iraq just took over their own training for their infrastructure, seems there is an end in sight for iraq. Do you see the end of 'provided' welfare soon?

Just as soon as your GVT can get their asses in gear and help people get off welfare and into the work force.

As for Iraq... is that pinpoint in the far distance an exit or a star to wish on?
